Target Return Policy: 90 Days for Most Items, 14 Days for Apple
Target gives you 90 days to return most unopened items in new condition for a refund or exchange. The clock runs much faster on technology: electronics and entertainment items get 30 days, and all Apple and Beats products get just 14 days. At the generous end of the scale, Target’s own brands can be returned for a full year with a receipt, and Target Circle Card holders get an extra 30 days on nearly everything. This guide covers every return window, how returns work in store, by mail and online, what happens without a receipt, and the items Target will not take back at all.

How to Return an Item to Target
Most items can go back to any Target store, and online orders can also be returned by mail. Starting the return online first gives you the barcode the store needs and speeds everything up:
Start online or in the app
- Sign in to your Target account on Target.com or in the Target app and find the item under your purchases.
- Choose Return (return to store or by mail) or Fix an issue if something arrived missing or damaged.
- Follow the prompts to complete the refund or replacement request, or to get your return barcode for an in-store return.
- If the item has to be mailed back, Target emails you a free return mailing label and instructions, also shown on your order details page.
Return it in store
Take the item, in its packaging with any accessories, plus your receipt, packing slip or return barcode to Guest Services at any Target store. Most Target.com purchases can be returned in stores. If you lost the paperwork, bring the credit or debit card you paid with — the store can attempt a receipt lookup, and Target Circle purchases are stored in your account.
Return it by mail
Pack the item with its original packaging and accessories and use the free label Target provides. Depending on the label issued, you either drop the parcel at an authorized UPS location or show a FedEx QR code at an authorized FedEx location. Note that Target may issue your refund before your parcel arrives; if the item turns out not to be eligible when inspected, Target may charge your card for the refund it already sent.
Large items and pickup returns
Most large items can be returned to a store, and some, such as furniture and electronics, may qualify for a pickup return by Target’s return carrier — typically items weighing more than 150 pounds. The item should be disassembled and boxed at the original delivery point, the packing slip should be included, and an adult signature is usually required at pickup. To check whether your item qualifies, call Target.com Guest Services at 1-800-591-3869.
How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Target?
For most of the store, the answer is 90 days. Target’s policy covers most unopened items sold by Target in new condition, returned within 90 days for a refund or exchange. For Target.com orders, the window begins when the order is invoiced — that is, when any part of it ships, is delivered by a Shipt shopper or is made ready for pickup.
Three things are worth knowing about the standard window:
- “Unopened and new condition” is the baseline. Items that are opened or damaged, or that have no receipt, may be denied a refund or exchange.
- Some items carry a modified policy. The variation is noted on the receipt, the packing slip, the Target policy board in store, Target.com, or the item description — check before you assume 90 days.
- Target Owned Brands are the big exception in your favor. If you are not satisfied with any Target Owned Brand item, you can return it within one year with a receipt for an exchange or a refund. Limited-time designer launches are excluded from that one-year promise and usually have a much shorter, roughly two-week window.
Target also reserves the right to deny returns, refunds and exchanges, including to prevent fraud or abuse.
What Is the Return Window for Electronics, Apple Products and Phones?
Electronics run on a shorter clock. Electronics and entertainment items must be returned within 30 days — that covers TVs, computers, cameras, headphones, video game hardware, movies and music. All Apple and Beats products, including mobile phones, get only 14 days, the tightest standard window in the store.
Phones have extra rules of their own:
- Mobile phones bought in store or through Order Pickup must be returned within 14 days.
- A phone bought on a carrier contract may be subject to the carrier’s early termination fees if returned, and contract items and plans must be returned in store with help from a Target Tech representative.
- A restocking charge of up to $35 may apply to phones, except where prohibited — but there is no restocking charge if the phone is unopened.
- Before returning any device, remove your personal data following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Can You Return an Item to Target Without a Receipt?
Yes, but expect store credit rather than your money back. Start with the lookups, because a verified purchase is refunded to your original payment method:
- Bring the card you paid with — the store can attempt a receipt lookup for Target Circle Cards and for personal Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover cards.
- Target Circle members can use their account and purchase history, including the Target Wallet, as proof of purchase.
- For online orders, the return barcode from your order details page or packing slip works as your receipt.
If the purchase cannot be verified, Guest Services may approve the return and refund you to a merchandise return card. That card can be used for merchandise in Target stores, and you will need to show government-issued ID to receive one. Two limits to remember: Target Plus Partner items returned in store without an eligible receipt will be denied outright, and returns and exchanges without a receipt may be limited more generally.
How Do Returns Work for Target.com and Target Plus Orders?
Orders sold by Target follow the same windows as store purchases, counted from when the order was invoiced. You can return to any store with your return barcode, or start the return in your account and mail the item back with Target’s free label. Replacements process as an even exchange and are subject to availability; refunds go back to the original payment method in most cases.
Orders from Target Plus Partners — the third-party sellers on Target.com — run on a shorter standard window:
- Most unopened Target Plus items in new condition can be refunded within 30 days.
- All Partner items must be returned to Target, either in store or by mail — you do not deal with the seller directly.
- Some Partner items have a modified policy shown in the Shipping & Returns section of the item description, and opened or damaged items may be denied.
- In-store returns of Partner items without an eligible receipt will be denied, so keep your order details.
What Items Can’t Be Returned to Target?
The following are final sale and cannot be returned:
- Trading cards and trading card accessories, such as Pokemon and sports cards and trading card binders
- Open or defective collectibles, such as special edition Barbie dolls, porcelain dolls, action figures and die-cast cars
- Personalized items and digital downloads
- Opened or unsealed breast pumps
- Gift cards of all kinds — Target GiftCards, specialty and prepaid gift cards, and Visa, Mastercard and American Express gift cards — which also cannot be redeemed for cash or credit except where required by law
- Select items sold by Target Plus Partners, as marked in the item description
A second group is exchange-only once opened: music, movies, video games and software can be exchanged for the same title (for the same or a different gaming platform), and opened airbeds can be exchanged for a similar item. Also note the location rules: items bought at Target Optical, Warby Parker, Pharmacy, Starbucks and Target Tech must be returned at those areas, and Target stores cannot accept international returns or exchanges.
How and When Will You Get Your Refund?
In most cases your refund goes automatically back to the original form of payment, and if you paid with more than one method it may be split back across all of them. Purchases paid for with a Target GiftCard are credited back as a new Target eGiftCard. For in-store returns you can sometimes choose a different option — cash purchases can come back as cash or a Target GiftCard, and third-party credit card purchases can go back to the card or a Target GiftCard.
Timing, counted from when Target approves the refund:
| How you paid | How long the refund typically takes |
|---|---|
| Target Circle Card | Up to 2 days after approval |
| Third-party credit card | Up to 5 days after approval |
| Items inspected by the Online Return Center | An average of 7–10 additional business days after the return center receives your item, before the refund is approved |
Shipping charges are refunded only in some cases — generally when the return was caused by a Target error. If your card has been lost or replaced, contact the card issuer for help tracing the refund.
Does Target Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Yes. For qualifying purchases made between November 1 and December 24, 2026, the return window does not start until December 26, 2026 — the normal window length then runs from that date:
- Electronics and entertainment (excluding Apple and Beats): 30 days from December 26 — return by January 24, 2027
- Apple and Beats products and unlocked or prepaid mobile phones: 14 days from December 26 — return by January 8, 2027
- Most Target Plus items (excluding seasonal holiday decor): 30 days from December 26 — return by January 24, 2027
Everything else keeps the regular policy, and holiday and limited-time-only collections may carry their own modified return terms.
Do Target Circle Members Get Extra Time to Return?
Yes — this is the easiest way to lengthen almost any Target window. Target Circle Card holders (debit and credit) and Target Circle 360 members receive an extra 30 days to return nearly all items purchased with their Target Circle Card at Target and Target.com. That turns the standard 90 days into 120, and the 30-day electronics window into 60. Two caveats: the extra 30 days does not stack onto Target Owned Brand items, which already have their one-year window, and the extra time only applies to purchases made with the Circle Card — full details and exclusions are at Target.com/CircleCard.

Conclusion
Target’s policy is built around a simple 90 days for most things, but the details are where the value hides: a full year on Target’s own brands, an extra 30 days if you pay with a Circle Card, and a holiday window that does not start ticking until December 26. Set against that are the short 14 days for Apple and Beats and the store-credit-only rule for no-receipt returns, so keep your receipt or return barcode and check the category clock before you assume you have three months.
