Walmart Return Policy

Walmart Return Policy: 90-Day Returns, Exceptions and Refund Rules

Walmart gives you 90 days to return most items, counted from the day you bought them in store or the day an online order reaches you. Bring your receipt or order number and the refund normally goes back to the same payment method you used. The catch is that a handful of popular categories run on much shorter clocks: most electronics get 30 days, wireless phones get just 14 days, and a major appliance can have as little as 2 days. This guide covers every return window, how returns work in store, by mail and from home, the rules when you have no receipt, and the items Walmart will not take back.

How to Return an Item to Walmart

You do not have to use the same channel you bought through — an online order can go back to a store, and a return started on your phone can be finished at a drop-off point:

Start in the app or your account

  1. Sign in on Walmart.com or in the Walmart app and open your Purchase History. If you checked out as a guest, go to walmart.com/returns instead.
  2. Find the item and choose Start a return, then pick a reason.
  3. Choose how you want to send it back: drop it at a store, return it curbside, mail it for free, or schedule a FedEx pickup where offered.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions. Some store drop-offs use a barcode you show at the desk, and mail returns give you a label to print.

Starting online first is fastest even if you plan to walk into a store, because the associate can pull your return straight up.

Return it in store or curbside

Take the item and your receipt or order number to any Walmart store — the payment card you used helps if the receipt is missing. Eligible items can also be brought back curbside at stores that offer it. Two exceptions: oversized freight items cannot be returned to stores at all, and anything that needed assembly, such as furniture or a grill, has to be fully taken apart before a store will accept it.

Return it by mail or FedEx pickup

For an online order you would rather not carry into a store, start the return in your account and choose the mail option: Walmart describes mail returns as free, and you can print the label and drop the parcel off, or schedule a FedEx pickup. One hard rule: perishable online orders cannot be returned by mail — start those in the app or online to arrange the refund instead.

How Long Do You Have to Return Something to Walmart?

For most of the store, the answer is 90 days after purchase or after the item is delivered to you. That standard window covers purchases made in Walmart U.S. stores, on Walmart.com and through Walmart Business, including everyday categories such as clothing, toys, home goods and small kitchen items — return inside the window with a receipt or order number and the refund goes to your original payment method.

A few practical points sit underneath the headline rule:

  • Keep the packaging and paperwork for 90 days. Returns are smoother with the box and accessories included.
  • Groceries have their own promise. Walmart’s Fresh Guarantee offers a refund, with a receipt, on produce, fresh flowers, meat, bakery, deli, dairy and frozen items. Some perishables cannot physically be returned but can still be refunded — start the return in the app or at walmart.com/returns.
  • The store manager has the final say. Walmart’s policy gives the store manager final authority over eligible returns, managers can refuse anything they judge a health or safety risk, and no manager can accept an item the policy makes ineligible.

What Is the Return Window for Electronics and Phones?

Electronics are where the generous 90-day rule stops. Most consumer electronics — TVs, laptops, tablets, cameras, gaming hardware and similar devices — must be returned within 30 days. The same 30 days covers PCs and PC components, vacuums and floor care, heating and cooling appliances such as air conditioners and air purifiers, electric bikes, electric scooters and hoverboards, and Walmart Protection Plans and AppleCare+.

Wireless phones are tighter still at 14 days, with one named exception: Verizon postpaid wireless phones get 30 days. Before returning any device, wipe your personal data completely by following the manufacturer’s reset instructions — Walmart’s policy asks this for phones, tablets, laptops and other electronics. A few more electronics rules worth knowing:

  • Items sold as part of an electronics or collectible bundle must all come back together to qualify for a refund.
  • Downloadable software and video games are not returnable.
  • An opened unlocked wireless phone can only be exchanged, within 14 days, and opened drones and projectors are exchange-only within 30 days.

Can You Return an Item to Walmart Without a Receipt?

Yes, but try the lookup first, because a verified purchase gets you a normal refund instead of store credit. Walmart can attempt to look up a store purchase from the debit or credit card you paid with; for online orders it can try a phone number or email address; and a receipt search tool on Walmart’s website covers store receipts.

If the purchase still cannot be found, a no-receipt return works like this:

  1. Take the item and a valid government-issued photo ID to a store.
  2. Your ID details go into a secure database Walmart uses to authorize returns.
  3. The return goes through Walmart’s refund verification process; if it is accepted, you get a Walmart gift card — store credit for stores and Walmart.com — and the money can take up to 3 hours to land on it.

There are limits: Walmart restricts the number and frequency of no-receipt returns, and eligibility is decided by that verification process, so a history of frequent receipt-free returns can lead to a refusal. Gifts are simpler: with a gift receipt the item can be exchanged, refunded to a Walmart gift card, or credited back to the sender’s original payment method; without one, it can be exchanged or refunded to a gift card.

How Do Returns Work for Walmart.com and Marketplace Orders?

Orders sold and shipped by Walmart follow the same windows as store purchases. Start the return from your Purchase History and pick your route: any store, curbside where offered, free by mail, or a FedEx pickup. The store exceptions from the how-to section apply here too — no freight, no major appliances (those start online for carrier collection), and assembled items must be dismantled first.

Orders from Marketplace sellers — the third-party sellers on Walmart.com — play by slightly different rules:

  • Most Marketplace items are returnable within 30 days, and collectibles and luxury items within 14 days.
  • The seller, not Walmart, is responsible for processing the return and its shipping arrangements, and the seller’s own return policy may add restocking fees of up to 20%.
  • Some Marketplace items cannot be taken to a Walmart store at all — typically freight, oversized or heavy items, certain hazardous materials, and collectible or luxury goods. Start those online and follow the seller’s shipping instructions.
  • Once the seller receives an eligible return, they verify it within 2 business days, and refunds reach your original payment method within 7 business days after that.

Before buying anything pricey on Walmart.com, check the “Sold and shipped by” line on the product page — it tells you whether the 90-day Walmart window or the shorter Marketplace rules will apply.

What Items Can’t Be Returned to Walmart?

Walmart and its Marketplace sellers will not accept returns, exchanges or refunds for the following, mostly for safety and legal reasons:

  • Firearms and ammunition, airsoft and air guns, BB guns, crossbows and archery bows, and pepper spray or bear spray
  • Gas-powered recreational vehicles such as dirt bikes, mini-bikes, go-carts, scooters, ride-ons, UTVs and ATVs
  • Trading cards, whether opened or unopened, and precious metals such as gold bars and coins
  • Alcohol and tobacco products
  • Gift cards, prepaid cell phone cards, prepaid gaming cards and SIM cards
  • Prescription medications and devices, and products containing pseudoephedrine, ephedrine or phenylpropanolamine
  • Pregnancy tests, ovulation tests and home diagnostic testing kits, including COVID-19 tests
  • Sex toys and vibrators, diabetic supplies, and hygienic medical equipment
  • Used or mounted tires, wheels and rims, and snow tires (brand-new unmounted tires can be returned to a store with an Auto Care Center)
  • Used or installed RV sewer lines, toilets, toilet bowls and urinals
  • Video on demand and downloadable video games and software

Money-type products are final sale too: Walmart Express bill payments, lottery tickets, branded gift cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex), reloadable credit and debit cards, and check or card cashing fees cannot be refunded. A middle category exists too: air beds and air mattresses, power generators and durable medical equipment such as crutches and mobility scooters are exchange-only within 90 days once opened or used.

How and When Will You Get Your Refund?

Return an item within its window with a receipt, and the refund normally goes back to the way you paid:

How you paidWhat you get backHow long it takes
Cash or checkCashImmediate
Credit cardThe same card — or a Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance if the card can’t be refundedUp to 7 days
Debit card used with a PINThe same card, cash, a Walmart gift card or Walmart BalanceUp to 7 days
Walmart gift card, Walmart Cash or Walmart BalanceA Walmart gift card or Walmart BalanceUp to 3 hours
PayPalPayPal, cash or a Walmart gift cardUp to 7 days
EBT cardBack to the EBT cardTypically within 7 days

Two details catch people out. First, a refund sent back to a debit or credit card on a return made without a receipt can take up to 7 business days to appear. Second, if Walmart cannot refund your original card, store purchases become store credit on a Walmart gift card or Walmart Balance, while online purchases are credited to your Walmart Balance. If you paid with more than one method, Walmart may put the whole refund onto a single one of them where the law allows.

Does Walmart Extend Returns for the Holidays?

Yes. Most items bought in store or online between October 1 and December 31 can be returned until January 31, which takes the pressure off gift buying. Walmart excludes wireless phones, protection plans, major appliances, Dyson products, and select seasonal and luxury goods — the usual shorter windows still apply to those.

Do Walmart+ Members Get Better Returns?

Walmart+ adds one genuinely useful perk: free returns picked up from your home. Walmart’s membership page promises pickup with no repacking and no label printing — you just have to be home when the driver arrives. It is limited to select locations and eligible purchases, so check whether your address qualifies. The membership itself can be refunded within 90 days, as long as it has not been used or activated.

Conclusion

Walmart’s 90-day window covers most of what the store sells, and the exceptions sit where you would expect them: electronics at 30 days, phones at 14 days, and major appliances on the tightest clock of all. Keep your receipt or order number and every return route stays open — in store, curbside, by mail, or home pickup with Walmart+. Lose it, and a photo ID can still turn most returns into store credit.
