How to Return an Item to Best Buy
- Check your window first. Count from the day you received the product — 15 days for most items, 60 if you are a Plus or Total member, 14 for activatable devices. If you are outside the window, the store generally cannot take the item back.
- Gather the item and its proof of purchase. Best Buy asks for the item in like-new condition with its accessories and packaging. For faster processing, bring your packing slip or receipt, the credit card you paid with, and a valid photo ID.
- Return it to any Best Buy store. Any item bought on BestBuy.com can be returned at any Best Buy store, not just the one it shipped from. A store associate inspects the item and processes the refund or exchange on the spot.
- Or mail it back free. Log in to your Best Buy account, open the order, and print the prepaid return label — return shipping with the label is free. Major appliances and TVs over 50 inches cannot use the label route; for major appliances, inspect the item at delivery and call Best Buy rather than taking it to a store.
- Watch for your refund. Refunds go back to your original payment method; mailed returns are typically processed within about 7 to 10 business days once received, and your bank may take additional time to post the credit.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Best Buy?
The standard window is 15 days, and Best Buy is precise about when it starts: the time period begins the day you receive your product. The window covers nearly everything Best Buy sells — and it applies equally to new, clearance, open-box, refurbished and pre-owned products, and to purchases from Best Buy stores, BestBuy.com, Best Buy Outlet, Pacific Sales and Magnolia Design Center. Items must come back in like-new condition with everything they came with; a return missing its accessories or packaging can be refused or reduced.
Fifteen days is short compared with big-box rivals, which is exactly why the membership window below matters so much at Best Buy.
Do My Best Buy Members Get Longer to Return?
Yes — this is the single biggest lever in Best Buy’s policy. My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members get 60 days to return or exchange most products, four times the standard window. The free My Best Buy tier does not extend returns; the 60 days belongs to the paid Plus and Total tiers only. The longer window still does not apply to everything: activatable devices stay at 14 days regardless of membership, and the restocking fees described below still apply to member returns.
Which Categories Have Shorter Windows or Fees?
Activatable devices — 14 days, plus a fee. Cell phones, cellular tablets, mobile hotspots and cellular wearables must be returned within 14 days, whoever you are. (Verizon activatable devices are the exception, with 30 days.) Best Buy has reinstated a $45 return fee on activatable devices, excluding prepaid phones, charged regardless of the reason for the return.
Restocking fees on high-value gear — 15% of the price. A second fee tier applies to drones, digital cameras and lenses, camcorders and action cameras, golf launch monitors, projectors and screens, premium and mobility scooters, electric wheelchairs, recovery systems, premium cold tubs and saunas, and special orders: return one of these and Best Buy deducts 15% of the purchase price.
Fee exceptions. No restocking fee is charged if the product is unopened, and the fees do not apply to purchases made in Alabama, Colorado, Hawaii, Iowa, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma or South Carolina, where state rules prohibit them.
A few longer exceptions. Hearing aids and pet training devices get 60 days, and Microsoft Office software gets 30 days — small mercies worth knowing if you are buying in those categories.
Can You Return to Best Buy Without a Receipt?
Sometimes, but manage your expectations. Best Buy can often look a purchase up — from your My Best Buy account or the card you paid with — which is why bringing the card helps. If Best Buy cannot verify the purchase, a no-receipt return is granted at the store’s discretion: at most you receive store credit, the return may be denied, and sales tax is not refunded. A valid photo ID is required for these returns, and return activity is recorded as part of Best Buy’s fraud-prevention checks.
How Do Online Returns and Exchanges Work?
BestBuy.com purchases can be returned at any Best Buy store — the fastest route, with the refund processed during your visit — or mailed back free using the prepaid return label from your account’s order page. Two cautions. First, the mail-in exceptions: major appliances and TVs over 50 inches cannot go back by label; appliances should be checked at delivery, and problems reported by phone. Second, items bought directly from a third-party vendor — in a store-within-a-store or through Best Buy’s Marketplace — follow the vendor’s own return policy, and Best Buy notes that member extended windows do not apply to Marketplace purchases.
What Can’t Be Returned to Best Buy?
Best Buy’s policy lists these non-returnables:
- Custom or personalized orders and final sale items
- Digital content, download codes and prepaid cards
- Gift cards and memberships
- Trading cards
- Opened consumables, such as batteries, ink, filters and supplements
- Opened SIM kits and opened LEGO sets
- Products that contact bodily fluids, for hygiene reasons
- Opened movies, music, video games and software — these are not refundable, but can be exchanged for the same title
In addition, opened items that are not in like-new condition, or that are missing parts, can be refused at the counter.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
Refunds go back to the original payment method where possible. The main exceptions in Best Buy’s published rules: if you paid more than $800 in cash, more than $250 by check, or with a debit card without a major card-network logo, the refund comes as a check, issued within 10 business days. In-store gift returns are refunded as store credit. Best Buy processes refunds when the return is approved; mailed-in returns generally take about 7 to 10 business days to process after arrival, and your bank can add its own posting time on top. Restocking fees, where they apply, are deducted from the refund.
Does Best Buy Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Yes. Best Buy’s Extended Holiday Return and Exchange Policy for 2026 covers most purchases made between October 30 and December 31, 2026, which can be returned through January 15, 2027 — and through January 31, 2027 for My Best Buy Plus and Total members. The exclusions matter: activatable devices and third-party contract items keep their 14-day window, and holiday products such as artificial trees, lights and decorations keep their standard 15 days — neither group gets the January extension.

Conclusion
Best Buy runs the tightest return policy of the big electronics retailers: 15 days standard, fees on the gear most likely to be returned, and a 14-day fuse on anything that activates. The counters are real, though — a Plus or Total membership quadruples your window to 60 days, mail returns are free, and the holiday extension to mid-January is generous. Buy tech at Best Buy with your calendar open, and keep every box until the window closes.
