Garmin Return Policy: 30 Days to Return Your Watch, GPS or Trainer

Garmin’s return policy gives you 30 days to return merchandise bought directly from Garmin, as long as it comes back in its original condition with everything it shipped with. The window runs from the date you receive an online order, or from the date of purchase at a Garmin retail store.

Three categories are never refundable — opened software, downloadable items and custom products — and you pay the return shipping yourself. This guide covers the window, the no-receipt rules, the restocking fee that can apply, and how long a refund takes to reach your account.

How to Return an Item to Garmin

  1. Check your window and gather your proof of purchase. Count 30 days from the date you received an online order, or from the purchase date for a store buy. Find your original receipt, or make sure the purchase is recorded in Garmin’s system.
  2. For an online order, submit a return request. Go to Garmin’s returns page and fill in the Return for Refund Request form with your order number and the shipping ZIP or postal code from the order, then follow the instructions it gives you.
  3. For a store purchase, take the item back to the store. Refunds and exchanges for retail store purchases must be processed at the store, so bring the item, its box and packaging, the UPC code, all accessories and your receipt.
  4. Pack the item completely. Garmin requires the product in its original condition, in its original box and packaging, with the UPC code and every accessory that came with it. A missing charger, cable or strap can slow or block the refund.
  5. Ship it back at your own cost. Return shipping is paid by the customer for online returns. Keep your tracking number until the refund lands, because credits can take up to 30 days to appear on your account.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Garmin?

The standard window is 30 days. For an online order, the 30 days run from the date you receive the order, not the date you placed it. For a purchase made at a Garmin retail store, the 30 days run from the date of purchase, and the refund or exchange must be processed at that store. The condition rule is the same either way: the product must be in its original condition, in its original box and packaging, with the UPC code and all accessories included.

Two limits catch people out. First, only items bought directly from Garmin fall under this policy — a Garmin watch bought from an authorised dealer or another retailer goes back under that seller’s return policy, not Garmin’s. Second, the clock is short and the exceptions are firm: once the 30 days pass, a change-of-mind return is no longer available, and a defective device moves to the warranty route instead, which starts with a call to Product Support for an RMA number.

Does Garmin Charge a Restocking Fee?

Sometimes — and this is the part of Garmin’s policy that surprises buyers. Garmin may charge a restocking fee of up to 15% of the purchase price in certain cases, and any fee that applies is deducted from your refund. The fee does not apply to a product that is defective or malfunctioning and returned inside the 30-day window. In practice, the fee is the risk you run on a late or incomplete return, so send the item back inside the window, in its original condition, with everything it came with, and the refund should come back in full.

What Can’t Be Returned to Garmin?

Garmin publishes a short list of items that are not eligible for a refund:

  • Opened software — once the seal is broken, the software cannot be returned for a refund
  • Cartography products — map products that have been opened cannot be refunded
  • Downloadable items — downloads are non-refundable once delivered
  • Custom products — a watch or product customised to your choices cannot be returned, even within the 30-day window

Opened software and cartography products are not a dead end, though: at a Garmin retail store they may be exchanged for the same item, even though no refund is given. The custom-product rule is the one to remember before you order. If you use Garmin’s customise option to swap a strap or change a standard part, you have created a custom product, and Garmin treats it as non-returnable. Buy the standard version of the same watch and the full 30-day return window applies.

Can You Return to Garmin Without a Receipt?

Garmin’s policy is built on proof of purchase, and there is no standard no-receipt return route. Products must be returned with the original receipt, or with a purchase record in Garmin’s system that proves the purchase. If you bought the item from Garmin online, your order record in Garmin’s system is that proof — so keep your order number and the email address you ordered with. If you bought in store and have lost the receipt, ask the store whether it can find the purchase in its system before you travel there, because a return without any proof of purchase is not something Garmin’s published policy promises.

How Do Online Returns and In-Store Returns Differ?

The two routes run on different rules, and Garmin says so plainly: online purchases are subject to Garmin’s online policy, which may differ from the retail store policy. An online order is returned by submitting a return request on Garmin’s website, using your order number and shipping ZIP or postal code, and shipping the item back at your own cost. A retail store purchase is returned at the store, with the refund or exchange processed there on the spot.

Repairs are a third route entirely. If a device needs repair rather than a change-of-mind return, you contact Product Support directly and Garmin issues a Return Material Authorization (RMA) number. The device is then sent to Garmin International headquarters in Olathe, KS, with specific instructions provided so the repair processes correctly. Do not ship a repair back without an RMA number — the number is what ties your device to your case.

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

Refunds go back to your original form of payment, and the timing is slower than at most retailers:

Return routeHow the refund timing works
Online order returned by mailCredit is issued to your original payment method once Garmin receives and processes the return; Garmin states credits may take up to 30 days to appear on your account
Retail store purchaseRefund or exchange processed at the store during your visit
Defective device under warrantyHandled through the RMA repair route, not as a refund — repair or replacement at Garmin’s discretion

Two costs sit with you on an online return: the return shipping, which Garmin does not pay, and any restocking fee that applies in your case, which is deducted from the refund. Original shipping charges are also non-refundable. Keep your return tracking number and your order number until the credit actually shows, because the 30-day credit window is long enough that a lost parcel can otherwise go unnoticed.

Does Garmin Extend Returns for the Holidays?

No extended holiday return window has been published on Garmin’s returns pages or announced for the 2026 season as of 8 November 2026. The standard 30 days applies to December purchases exactly as it does in June, so a watch bought as a gift in early December is already outside its window by early January. Garmin does publish a holiday gift guide, but a gift guide is not a returns extension. If you are buying a Garmin device as a present, buy it as close to the day you give it as you can, and keep the receipt and the box intact so the recipient still has the full 30 days.

Conclusion

Garmin’s return policy is fair but tight: 30 days, original condition, proof of purchase, and you pay to send it back. The two things to get right are the custom-product trap — customise a watch and the return window disappears — and the slow refund, which can take up to 30 days to appear. Buy the standard model, keep the box and every accessory, and start the return request the moment you decide, and a Garmin return is straightforward.
