Lowe’s Return Policy: 90 Days on Most Items, 48 Hours for Major Appliances and a Full Year on Lowe’s Cards
Lowe’s return policy gives you 90 days from the original purchase date to return most new, unused merchandise for a refund or exchange, as long as you have proof of purchase. The catch is the exception list: major appliances and several gas-powered tools must be returned within 48 hours of delivery or pickup, TVs and most outdoor power equipment get 30 days, and Christmas and Halloween items must be back on or before the holiday itself. Pay with a Lowe’s credit card or business account and most purchases stretch to 365 days. This guide covers the windows, the exceptions, what happens without a receipt, and how each refund method pays out.
RETURN PERIOD — 90 days (most items)
MAJOR APPLIANCES — 48 hours from delivery or pickup
LOWE’S CREDIT CARDS — 365 days
WITHOUT PROOF OF PURCHASE — No return without valid proof of purchase

How to Return an Item to Lowe’s
- Check your window first. Count from the original purchase date — 90 days for most items, but only 48 hours from delivery or pickup for major appliances and the listed gas-powered equipment, and 30 days for TVs, electronics, liquid paint, water heaters, HVAC systems and most outdoor power equipment. Holiday items have to beat the holiday itself.
- Find your proof of purchase. Lowe’s does not accept returns or exchanges without one. A paper or electronic receipt works, and so does anything Lowe’s can validate the purchase from — your order number, the payment card or digital wallet you used, your phone number, or your MyLowe’s account.
- Bring the item in returnable condition. Merchandise should be new and unused, with its accessories. For the 48-hour categories, an item still factory-sealed gets a 30-day window instead, so think before you break a seal.
- Take it to any Lowe’s store in the US. Store and Lowes.com purchases can be returned at the customer service desk of any regular Lowe’s store. Lowe’s Outlet purchases are the exception — they only go back to the same Outlet.
- Or start the return online for Lowes.com orders. Online orders can also be sent back by mail where Lowe’s provides a return label. Hazardous items, flammable items and products with lithium batteries have to be returned in store.
- Receive your refund. With a valid proof of purchase, the refund goes back to your original payment method in most cases — see the refund section below for the exceptions.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Lowe’s?
The standard window is 90 days from the original purchase date — Lowe’s counts from the purchase date, not delivery. The item must be new and unused, with a valid proof of purchase. Most of the store qualifies: hand tools, hardware, light fixtures, décor and building materials can all be refunded or exchanged at any Lowe’s store in the US.
Which Items Only Get 48 Hours or 30 Days?
The 48-hour group is the strictest. The return must be initiated within 48 hours of delivery or pickup for major appliances; portable and window air conditioners and evaporative coolers; paint sprayers; construction heat and parts; tile saws; utility vehicles, golf carts, go-karts and motorized bikes; and gas-powered portable generators, pressure washers, chainsaws and pole saws. There is one relief: an item in its original, unopened, factory-sealed packaging may be returned within 30 days instead — but the gas-powered group is expressly not eligible. Inspect a delivered appliance immediately, and do not open a paint sprayer’s box until you are sure.
The 30-day group is broader. It covers TVs and electronics; liquid paint; water heaters; HVAC systems; most outdoor power equipment such as mowers, blowers, trimmers, tillers and snow blowers; special order custom blinds and window treatments; and plants other than trees, shrubs and perennials. Two exceptions soften it: CRAFTSMAN battery and electric outdoor power equipment gets 90 days, and trees, shrubs and perennials get 365 days. Configured special order products returned after 72 hours may also incur a 20% restocking fee, so confirm measurements and finishes before ordering.
Do Lowe’s Cardholders Get a Longer Window?
Yes – a much longer one. Purchases made with a Lowe’s Commercial Account (LCA), MyLowe’s Pro Rewards Credit (MLPRC), the MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express Card (MLPRA), the MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card (MLRCC) or Lowe’s Business Rewards (LBR) may be returned within 365 days of the date of purchase – the biggest lever in the policy for anyone mid-renovation, where materials are bought months before they are installed.
The exception categories still apply underneath it – the 48-hour and 30-day items keep their shorter windows, and holiday items still have to beat the holiday. Lowe’s Pay purchases are handled by the financing institution and do not qualify for these extensions.
Can You Return to Lowe’s Without a Receipt?
Not without proof of purchase – and Lowe’s says so plainly: returns and exchanges are not accepted without a valid proof of purchase. The good news is that proof does not have to be the paper receipt. If you have lost it, Lowe’s can attempt to validate the purchase using an electronic receipt, your order number, the payment card or digital wallet you paid with, your phone number, or your MyLowe’s Pro Rewards or MyLowe’s Rewards account – which is why shopping signed in quietly protects every purchase you make.
Expect identification to be part of the process: Lowe’s refund verification systems may require a valid picture ID (state driver’s license, state ID card or military ID). If the purchase cannot be validated at all, the return cannot be processed.
How Do Online Returns and Exchanges Work?
Lowes.com purchases can be returned at any Lowe’s store – usually the fastest route, with the refund processed during your visit – or by mail where Lowe’s provides a return label for the item. Keep your packing slip or the digital receipt in your Lowes.com account handy either way; both serve as proof of purchase.
Two cautions. First, hazardous materials, flammable items and products with lithium batteries must be returned in store, not shipped. Second, items sold by third-party Marketplace sellers follow the seller’s own return policy, so check the seller’s terms before you buy. If an order arrives damaged, incomplete or missing parts, contact customer care at 1-800-445-6937 rather than starting a standard return.
What Can’t Be Returned to Lowe’s?
- Gift cards of every kind – Lowe’s, third-party, Visa and Mastercard gift cards – plus in-store credits, refund cards and merchandise cards
- Labor and installation charges
- Delivery and shipping charges, unless the charge resulted from a Lowe’s error
- Safety masks and facial coverings, which are no longer accepted for return or exchange
- Highway trailers and whole house generators
- As-is merchandise and paint samples
- Trading cards
- Holiday items purchased after the holiday – Christmas and Halloween purchases made after the day itself are final sale
On top of the published list, Lowe’s Outlet locations are all-sales-final except for one case: a major appliance with mechanical or electrical damage that makes it non-functional, returned to the same Outlet within 48 hours. Cosmetic damage and wrong-size Outlet purchases cannot be returned – inspect before you pay.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
With a valid proof of purchase, returns are exchanged or refunded to the original payment method, processed when the return is accepted at the desk. The published exceptions are about how you paid:
| Payment method | How refund is issued |
|---|---|
| Credit card | Back to the original card; posting time after Lowe’s processes it depends on your card issuer. |
| Debit card | Refunded as cash or credited back to the debit card. |
| Check | Refunded as in-store credit within 3 days of purchase; after that, cash or in-store credit depending on verification – and no refund at all if there is an outstanding bad check. |
| Cash and cash equivalents over $1,000 | Refunded by check from Lowe’s corporate office. |
| Gift card, refund card, merchandise card or in-store credit | Refunded as in-store credit. |
| Lowe’s Pay | Credited back through the financing institution, which handles the refund with you directly; Lowe’s Pay purchases cannot be refunded as cash or in-store credit. |
| MyLowe’s Money | Refunded to the digital wallet. |
Does Lowe’s Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Not in the way its biggest rivals do. Lowe’s has published no general holiday extension in its return policy – no “buy in November, return until the end of January” window for ordinary merchandise – which matters less than it sounds because the standard window is already 90 days.
What Lowe’s publishes instead is a hard deadline on holiday merchandise itself: Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the day of the holiday, and items purchased after the holiday are final sale. A string of lights bought on December 20 has to be back by December 25 – the 90-day clock does not rescue seasonal stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Most new, unused merchandise can be refunded or exchanged within 90 days of the original purchase date with a valid proof of purchase. Major appliances and several powered categories get only 48 hours from delivery or pickup, TVs and most outdoor power equipment get 30 days, and purchases on Lowe’s credit cards and business accounts get 365 days.
Yes, if you paid with a Lowe’s Commercial Account, a MyLowe’s Pro Rewards credit card, the MyLowe’s Rewards Credit Card or Lowe’s Business Rewards – those purchases have 365 days. Trees, shrubs and perennials also get a full year. For anything else, the 90-day window (or your category’s shorter exception window) is the deadline.
The return must be initiated within 48 hours of delivery or pickup. The one exception is an appliance still in its original, unopened, factory-sealed packaging, which may be returned within 30 days.
You cannot return without a valid proof of purchase, but the paper receipt is only one form of proof. Lowe’s can attempt to validate the purchase from an electronic receipt, order number, the payment card or digital wallet used, a phone number, or your MyLowe’s Rewards account, and may ask for a valid picture ID.
Returning to a store is free, and Lowes.com orders can be returned at any store. What you will not get back is the original delivery or shipping charge – those are nonrefundable unless the charge was Lowe’s error.
In-store refunds are processed when the return is accepted, back to your original payment method; how quickly a card refund posts then depends on your issuer. Two published exceptions: purchases over $1,000 paid in cash are refunded by a check from Lowe’s corporate office, and anything bought with a gift card or store credit comes back as in-store credit rather than cash.
Gift cards, in-store credits and merchandise cards; labor and installation charges; delivery and shipping charges; safety masks; highway trailers; whole house generators; as-is merchandise; paint samples; and trading cards. Holiday items bought after the holiday are final sale, and Outlet sales are final except for non-functional major appliances returned within 48 hours.
No general January extension is published – the standard 90-day window simply carries holiday purchases. The strict rule runs the other way: Christmas and Halloween items must be returned on or before the day of the holiday, and items purchased after the holiday are final sale.

Lowe’s runs one of the more workable return policies in home improvement: a genuine 90-day standard window, a full year if you pay with a Lowe’s card or buy trees, shrubs and perennials, and refunds that mostly land back on the original payment method. The traps are at the edges – the 48-hour fuse on appliances and gas-powered equipment, holiday items that die with the holiday, and a proof-of-purchase rule with no fallback. Keep your receipt or shop signed in, inspect big deliveries the day they land, and the policy is easy to live with.
