eBay Return Policy: 30 Days Under the Money Back Guarantee and the Seller’s Own Rules

eBay’s return policy is really two policies working together. The seller sets the change-of-mind return window in each listing, and eBay’s Money Back Guarantee sits behind it, giving you 30 days after the estimated or actual delivery date to report an item that never arrived or is not as described. If the item is wrong, damaged or missing, the seller pays for return shipping and must refund you within 2 business days of receiving the item back.

That split is the thing to understand before you buy. A seller who does not offer returns can still be forced to take an item back when it does not match the listing. But a change-of-mind return only exists if the seller’s listing says so. This guide explains how both halves work, what the deadlines are, and how to get eBay to step in when a seller does not cooperate.

How to Return an Item on eBay

  1. Start the return from My eBay. Find the item in your purchase history and select “return” or “item not received”. Do this within 30 days of delivery, or within the seller’s stated return window if that window is longer. For a change-of-mind return, check the listing’s return policy first — it tells you whether returns are accepted and who pays for shipping.
  2. Give the seller 3 business days to respond. The seller is required to respond and provide a solution within 3 business days of your request. In some cases eBay may automatically accept the return on the seller’s behalf.
  3. Send the item back by the date eBay shows you. The latest date to ship the return appears in the email eBay sends you and inside the return request. If you do not ship by that date, eBay may close the return request. Use tracked shipping that can be independently validated.
  4. Wait for the refund. If return tracking shows the item was delivered, the seller must issue a full refund within 2 business days of receiving it. eBay may automatically issue the refund on the seller’s behalf once delivery is confirmed.
  5. Ask eBay to step in if nothing happens. If the seller has not responded or has not issued a refund by the deadline, either party can ask eBay to step in. You have up to 21 business days after the request date if the seller never responded, or 10 business days after the refund deadline has passed.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items on eBay?

There is no single eBay return window, because the answer depends on why you are returning the item. Under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, you have 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date to report an item that did not arrive, and the same 30 days — or the seller’s stated return window, whichever is longer — to request a return for an item that does not match the listing.

Change-of-mind returns are different. If the listing states that the seller offers returns, you may return the item for any reason, including because you changed your mind. Your deadline is the seller’s stated return window in the listing, and you must check it before you buy — some sellers offer 30 days, some offer 14, and some offer none at all. When the seller does not offer returns, or your request falls outside the seller’s window, the seller may choose whether to accept or deny the return.

Two categories have their own deadlines. Trading cards must be returned within 3 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date when the seller does not offer returns. Event tickets get the later of 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date or 7 calendar days after the event date.

Does the Money Back Guarantee Cover Every Purchase?

Almost every purchase is covered, but not all of them. The eBay Money Back Guarantee applies when the buyer does not receive an item, the item received does not match the listing — for example the seller sent the wrong item, or it arrives broken, damaged or faulty — or the seller does not fulfill their return policy as stated in the listing.

To be eligible, you must complete and pay for your purchase on eBay.com using an eligible payment method at checkout. Eligible methods include credit and debit cards, PayPal and PayPal Credit, Apple Pay and Google Pay, Venmo for US sellers, Alipay, wire transfer facilitated by eBay, and eBay gift cards, vouchers and eBay Bucks. Items paid for where any part of the payment was completed outside of eBay — such as a bank transfer, cash, money orders or escrow services — are not covered.

Some items are excluded entirely: real estate, websites and businesses for sale; digital content, intangible goods and NFTs; classified ads; services; sports trading card case breaks, box breaks and pack breaks sold by pre-approved sellers; travel tickets or vouchers; industrial equipment and heavy machinery; and motor vehicles, including recreational vehicles, aircraft and boats. Vehicles and business equipment have their own separate protection programs.

What If the Seller Does Not Offer Returns?

This is where eBay’s policy surprises many buyers. A seller who does not offer returns can still be required to take an item back. If the item you received is wrong, broken, damaged or faulty and was not clearly described that way, you are entitled to return it for a refund even if the seller does not offer returns.

The same applies when the seller states a return policy and then does not honor it. If the listing says the seller offers returns, the buyer may return the item for any reason, including a change of mind, and the seller must allow the return for a full refund. If eBay steps in and finds the seller did not fulfill their return policy, it treats the case as if the item did not match the listing. But when the seller genuinely does not offer returns and your reason is simply that you changed your mind, the seller may choose whether to accept or deny the return.

What Can’t Be Returned on eBay?

There is no single list of non-returnable items, because each seller sets their own policy. But several situations block a return under eBay’s published rules:

  • Items in excluded categories — real estate, digital content and NFTs, classified ads, services, travel tickets, vehicles and industrial equipment are outside the Money Back Guarantee altogether.
  • Final sale Authenticity Guarantee purchases — some authenticated items are considered final sale, including sneakers, streetwear, trading cards, watches and luxury bags where the seller does not offer returns or the return window has passed. These are still covered if the item was damaged during shipping or the seller does not honor their stated returns policy.
  • Items paid for outside eBay checkout — any part of the payment completed outside eBay removes Money Back Guarantee coverage.
  • Items returned in a worse condition — you must return the item in the same condition in which you received it. If it comes back used, damaged or missing parts, some sellers may deduct the loss in value from the refund.
  • Counterfeit items — if there are strong indicators that you received a counterfeit item, you must cooperate with eBay to ensure proper disposal, and you must not sell the item on eBay or elsewhere. You may not be required to ship it back to the seller.

Does eBay Charge a Restocking Fee?

eBay itself charges no restocking fee, and the Money Back Guarantee costs nothing extra — it is automatically included with virtually every eligible purchase on ebay.com. But a change-of-mind return can still cost you money, because the seller’s stated return policy governs it.

For a change-of-mind return, your refund may be reduced by any restocking fee the seller specified in the listing at the time of purchase, and by the return shipping cost, unless the listing says the seller pays for return shipping. For an item that does not match the listing, the seller is responsible for return shipping, and you should not be charged a restocking fee. If the buyer is responsible for return shipping, that cost is not included in the refund.

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

For most purchases, buyers are refunded to their original payment method. If eBay cannot send the refund to your original payment method, it may provide the refund by another method such as PayPal, or by coupons or vouchers redeemable for purchases on eBay.

Does eBay Extend Returns for the Holidays?

eBay has published no site-wide extended holiday return window. Return deadlines on eBay are set by each seller’s stated policy in the listing, plus the 30-day Money Back Guarantee window. A seller may choose to offer a longer window over the holidays, but that is the seller’s choice, not eBay’s rule. Check the return policy in the listing before you buy a holiday gift, and do not assume the 30 days will stretch.

Is Returning Different for Different Sellers?

Yes — that is the core of how eBay works. Every seller sets their own return policy, and the listing is the contract. One seller may offer free 30-day returns, another may offer 14 days with the buyer paying return shipping, and a third may offer no returns at all. The Money Back Guarantee is the floor underneath all of them: it protects you when the item never arrives, does not match the listing, or the seller breaks their own stated policy.

Authenticity Guarantee items add another layer. Eligible luxury items are first shipped to an authenticator who inspects them before delivery to you. If an authenticated item is eligible to be returned, you ship it back to the authentication facility, not to the seller, so it can be inspected again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each seller sets their own return policy in the listing. Behind it, the eBay Money Back Guarantee gives you 30 days after the estimated or actual delivery date to report an item that never arrived or is not as described. Sellers must respond within 3 business days and refund within 2 business days of receiving a returned item.

It depends on the reason. If the item is wrong, damaged or faulty, you can return it for a refund even if the seller does not offer returns. If you simply changed your mind, the seller may choose whether to accept the return. Authenticity Guarantee final sale items follow the same rule, with cover only for shipping damage or a broken returns policy.

For an item that does not match the listing, 30 calendar days after the estimated or actual delivery date, or the seller’s stated window if that is longer. For a change of mind, the seller’s stated window in the listing. Trading cards have a 3-day window when the seller does not offer returns, and event tickets get the later of 30 days after delivery or 7 days after the event.

If the item does not match the listing, the seller pays. For a change-of-mind return, the listing decides: “free returns” means the seller pays, and “buyer pays” means you do. Returns should be sent with tracked shipping, and signature confirmation is required on orders of $750 or more.

The seller must issue the refund within 2 business days of receiving the returned item, and eBay may issue it automatically once tracking shows delivery. eBay’s help pages say most sellers refund within 6 business days of receiving the item. Refunds go to your original payment method.

Real estate, websites and businesses for sale, digital content and NFTs, classified ads, services, travel tickets, motor vehicles and industrial equipment are excluded. Items paid for outside eBay checkout are also excluded, as are items collected by a third party on your behalf or shipped to an address you provided incorrectly.

Wait 3 business days, then ask eBay to step in. You can ask from 3 business days after your request, and no later than 21 business days after the request date if the seller never responded. eBay may also step in on its own if the seller did not respond.

Yes. Either the buyer or the seller may submit an appeal within 30 calendar days of eBay’s decision. eBay may ask for additional documentation as part of the review, and it reserves the right to seek reimbursement from the seller if a buyer successfully appeals.

Conclusion

eBay’s return policy only makes sense once you see the two layers. The seller’s listing sets the change-of-mind rules, and the Money Back Guarantee sets the floor: 30 days to report a problem, 3 business days for the seller to respond, and a refund within 2 business days of the return arriving. Read the listing’s return section before you buy, keep your tracking, and ask eBay to step in the moment a seller goes quiet. The protection is strong, but it runs on deadlines, and the deadlines are yours to meet.
