Aerie Return Policy 2026: 60-Day Full Refunds, Free In-Store Returns & Holiday Deadline
Aerie’s return policy gives you 60 days from the purchase date to return an item for a full refund, and after that you can still return it for merchandise credit — there is no hard cut-off where a return becomes impossible. Returns are free in any AE, Aerie, Offline or AE Factory store, online returns cost $5 unless you qualify for a free one, and purchases made on or after October 23 can be returned through February 1, 2027 under the extended holiday policy.
This guide covers the windows, the no-receipt rules, the swimwear and underwear hygiene rule, and how fast each refund method pays out.

How to Return an Item to Aerie
- Check your window and your proof of purchase. You have 60 days from the purchase date for a full refund, and merchandise credit after that. Gather your receipt, invoice, order history page or order email — proof of purchase is what unlocks a refund to your original payment method.
- For the fastest, free return, take it to a store. Any AE, Aerie, Offline or AE Factory store accepts returns of items bought online or in any store. Bring the item and your proof of purchase, and choose an exchange, a refund to your original payment method, or merchandise credit.
- For a mail return, start in the online portal. Use Aerie’s online return portal to print a shipping label, or get a digital label to scan at USPS. Note that an online order is not eligible for return until the full order has shipped, and in-store purchases cannot be returned online at all.
- Pick how you want your money back. Online, Real Rewards members can take Instant Credit — an AEO e-gift card emailed as soon as you initiate the return — or wait for the standard refund, or take merchandise credit on an AEO Merchandise return card.
- Wait for processing. Aerie asks you to allow up to 2–4 weeks for a mailed return to be received and the refund issued, and your refund should then be available in your account 5–7 business days after it is issued. In-store returns skip that wait entirely.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Aerie?
The standard window is 60 days from the date of purchase for a full refund, under Aerie’s “100% Happiness Promise.” That is a longer full-refund window than most apparel retailers offer, and it is counted from the purchase date, not from delivery. After 60 days the door does not close: the same item can still be returned for merchandise credit, and Aerie’s published policy sets no final cut-off for that credit route. Two conditions apply at every stage, though. The item must be unworn, unwashed and undamaged, and Aerie states plainly that if there appears to be fraud or abuse, it may not accept the return. One more timing note: an online purchase cannot be returned until the full order has shipped.
Can You Return Aerie Swimwear and Underwear?
Yes, with one condition that matters more here than at most retailers. Swimsuits and underwear must come back unworn, unwashed and undamaged, with their hygienic liners in place. That liner rule is the practical test: if the hygienic liner has been removed, the item is unlikely to be accepted, because the store cannot verify it was never worn. The same unworn, unwashed, undamaged standard applies to everything else Aerie sells, but swimwear and underwear are the categories where shoppers most often get caught out. Keep the liners and tags in place until you are sure you are keeping the piece.
What About Aerie Bras — Is There a Special Guarantee?
Yes, and it is one of Aerie’s genuinely distinctive perks. Aerie states on its bras pages that “with our Bra Fit Guarantee, we offer free returns on bras.” That sits on top of the standard policy: bras already qualify for free online returns under the general rule, and the guarantee reinforces that a bra that does not fit is not a purchase you are stuck with. If you are between sizes, order the options and use the guarantee rather than guessing — the return costs you nothing either way, in store or by mail.
Can You Return to Aerie Without a Receipt?
It depends on what you want back. With proof of purchase — a receipt, invoice, order history page or order email — you get the full choice: an exchange, a refund to your original form of payment, or merchandise credit. Without proof of purchase, Aerie’s published in-store rule still gives you an out, but a narrower one: you can exchange your item for a different size. A full refund to your original payment method is not available without proof. If you bought online, proof is usually easy to recover from your ae.com order history page or order confirmation email.
How Do Online Returns and Mail Returns Work?
Online returns run through Aerie’s return portal, linked from the returns policy page. You can print a shipping label or get a digital label to scan at USPS, which is useful if you do not have a printer. The fee is $5 for a standard online return, but it is free in four cases: Real Rewards Level 3 Members, Credit Cardmembers, and returns of Aerie bras, bralettes, swimsuits, and third-party footwear. Real Rewards members also get the Instant Credit option: an AEO e-gift card emailed to you as soon as you initiate the return, so you can shop again without waiting for the warehouse. The one hard limit is that in-store purchases cannot be returned online — if you bought it in a store, it has to go back to a store.
What Can’t Be Returned to Aerie?
Aerie’s published exclusion list is short, but the entries on it are absolute:
- Items marked Final Sale — these cannot be returned or exchanged at all, so check the product page and your receipt before buying clearance pieces you are unsure about
- Worn, washed or damaged items — returns must be unworn, unwashed and undamaged, and swimwear and underwear additionally need their hygienic liners in place
- Returns that appear to involve fraud or abuse — Aerie reserves the right to refuse these
- Purchases made through third-party applications — these are not handled under Aerie’s own policy at all; they must be returned through the application where the purchase was made, under that application’s rules
Everything else Aerie sells — bras, underwear, leggings, loungewear, sweatshirts, swimwear, activewear and accessories — follows the standard 60-day full-refund and merchandise-credit-afterwards structure.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
In store, the refund is handled at the desk during your visit, and you choose the form it takes. By mail, the timeline is longer, and Aerie publishes it in two parts: the warehouse stage and the bank stage.
| Return route | How the refund timing works |
|---|---|
| In store, with proof of purchase | Full refund to the original form of payment, or merchandise credit on an AEO Merchandise return card, processed during your visit |
| In store, exchange | Swap for items of equal or lesser value, or for a different size if you have no proof of purchase |
| Online, Instant Credit (Real Rewards members) | AEO e-gift card emailed as soon as you initiate the return — no waiting for the warehouse |
| Online, standard refund | Allow up to 2–4 weeks for Aerie to receive your items and issue the refund; the refund should then be available in your account 5–7 business days after it is issued |
| Online, merchandise credit | AEO Merchandise return card, after the same 2–4 week receipt and processing window |
The practical takeaway: if you need the money back quickly, return in store. If you are mailing, choose Instant Credit when you are a Real Rewards member and plan to shop at Aerie again — it is the only route that pays out before the warehouse has even received the box.
Does Aerie Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Yes — and the 2026 dates are already published. Under Aerie’s Extended Holiday Return Policy, merchandise purchased online or in store on or after October 23 may be returned through February 1, 2027, or 60 days from the date of purchase, whichever is later, provided you have the original proof of purchase or a gift receipt. That “whichever is later” wording matters: a purchase made in late December still gets its full 60 days if that runs past February 1, while an October purchase gets stretched out to February 1 either way. One exception: purchases made through third-party applications are not covered by this extension — those go back through the app you bought them on. If you are buying Aerie gifts this season, keep the gift receipt with the gift; it is what makes the February 1 deadline available to the recipient.
Is Returning Different for Store and Online Purchases?
The windows are the same, but the routes are not interchangeable. A purchase made in a store can only be returned in a store — it cannot be sent back by mail, and the online portal will not accept it. A purchase made online gives you both routes: return it by mail through the portal (with the $5 fee unless you qualify for a free return), or take it to any AE, Aerie, Offline or AE Factory store for a free return. Online orders also carry the extra rule that they cannot be returned until the full order has shipped. If you live near a store, the in-store route wins on every measure — it is free, immediate, and it works for both online and in-store purchases.

Aerie’s return policy is one of the friendlier ones in apparel: 60 days for a full refund is generous, merchandise credit after that means there is no cliff edge, in-store returns are free and fast, and the holiday extension to February 1, 2027 is already published for this season. The rules that actually trip people up are the small ones — the hygienic liner on swimwear and underwear, the fact that in-store purchases cannot go back by mail, and the proof-of-purchase requirement for a refund rather than a size exchange.
