CarMax Return Policy
CarMax’s return policy gives you a 10-day money-back guarantee on a used car: return it to the store where you bought it within 10 days, in a condition consistent with when you bought it, and you get your money back. Every CarMax car also carries a 30-day limited warranty (longer in select states) and a 125-point inspection.
The two numbers that trip buyers up are the old ones: CarMax cut this guarantee from 30 days to 10 days in May 2024, so any article still quoting 30 days is out of date. This guide covers the 10 days, the condition rule, and what happens after the window closes.
Return Period: 10 days (money-back guarantee)
Limited Warranty: 30 days (longer in select states)
Inspection: 125-point inspection on every car
Return Location: The store where you bought it
Return Windows at a Glance
| Category | Return window | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Money-back guarantee | 10 days from purchase | Return to the selling store, in a condition consistent with purchase; any transfer or shipping fees are non-refundable |
| Limited warranty | 30 days (longer in select states) | See the store for written details; covers the car after the guarantee ends |
| Old 30-day guarantee | No longer current | Cut to 10 days effective 12 May 2024; the 30-day terms were honoured only for cars bought on or before 11 May 2024 |
| Selling your car to CarMax | Separate transaction | An online offer is generally good for 7 days to compare your options; this is not a return |
| Optional MaxCare plan | Separate optional cover | Its own terms apply; check your plan documents rather than the money-back guarantee |
How to Return a Car to CarMax
- Act inside the 10 days. The guarantee runs for 10 days from purchase. Do not wait until day 9 to decide: book your inspection and your return visit early, because the store visit itself has to happen inside the window.
- Keep the car in the condition you bought it in. The published test is that the car’s condition must be consistent with when you bought it. New damage, aftermarket modifications or missing equipment can all put the guarantee at risk, so treat the car gently during the trial period.
- Take it back to the store where you bought it. The guarantee is handled by the selling store, not by any CarMax location you happen to pass. Bring the car, the sales contract and all keys and fobs supplied at purchase.
- Settle the money side at the store. The store unwinds the purchase, including coordinating with your lender if you financed the car. Any shipping or transfer fee you paid to move the car to your store is separate from the purchase price and is not refunded.
- If you financed with negative equity, sort that separately. Where a trade-in’s negative equity was rolled into the new loan, that amount still has to be dealt with: either repaid or financed into a different vehicle, subject to approval. Ask the store to explain both options before you sign anything.
How Long Do You Have to Return a Car to CarMax?
The answer is 10 days, and it is worth saying twice because so much older content still says 30. CarMax launched a 30-day money-back guarantee in January 2021, then reduced it to 10 days effective 12 May 2024, explaining that the 10-day version remained an industry leader and gave buyers time to fall in love with the vehicle or return it for any reason. Cars bought on or before 11 May 2024 kept the old 30-day terms, but every car bought since then runs on the 10-day guarantee.
Ten days is still a real trial period, and it is longer than the 7 days offered by the best-known online rival. It is enough time to drive the car in normal use, have an independent mechanic inspect it, and check that it fits your life: child seats, commuting, parking and all. What it is not is a long test: a car bought on a Saturday and returned the following Tuesday week is already at the edge, so plan the mechanic’s inspection for the first few days, not the last.
What Condition Must the Car Be In?
CarMax’s condition test is simple to state and strict in practice: the car must come back in a condition consistent with when you bought it. That means the same bodywork, the same interior, the same equipment and the same mechanical state, allowing only for the normal use of the 10 days.
Three things commonly break this test. New body damage, even a small scrape, changes the car’s condition. Aftermarket modifications: a new stereo, tinted windows, a tow hitch fitted at home: change it too. Missing items, such as a second key fob or the owner’s manual, can lead to a deduction or a delay. Photograph the car on delivery day, inside and out, including the odometer, so you have a record of what ‘consistent’ looked like when the guarantee started.
Can You Exchange a CarMax Car Instead of Returning It?
Yes, in practice, because the guarantee lets you return a car for any reason, and nothing stops you from buying a different CarMax car straight afterwards. The store can handle the return and a new purchase as two steps in one visit, which is how most buyers use the guarantee when the first car turns out to be the wrong size or specification.
Two money points apply to an exchange done this way. First, the transfer or shipping fee on the first car is not refunded, and a transfer fee may apply again if the replacement has to be shipped to your store. Second, if you finance the replacement, the new deal is a fresh credit decision: an exchange can involve a further credit check, unlike a straight return where the original loan is simply paid off. Ask the store to confirm both points before you commit to the swap.
What Happens to Your Finance and Trade-In?
If you financed the car, the store coordinates with the lender: CarMax Auto Finance or an outside lender: to pay the loan off when the car is returned under the guarantee. The account is then closed, and because the loan is paid in full rather than defaulted, a guarantee return is not treated like a repossession. Your credit file may still show the original enquiry and the short-lived account, and lender updates typically arrive monthly, so allow a billing cycle or two for the closure to display.
The trade-in side needs care. If you traded a car in as part of the deal, that car has usually already been processed into CarMax’s inventory, so getting your exact old car back is unlikely. If negative equity from the trade-in was rolled into the new loan, you must either repay that amount or finance it into another vehicle, subject to approval. Settle this question at the return visit, in writing, before you leave the store.
What Covers the Car After the 10 Days?
Once the guarantee ends, the 30-day limited warranty takes over. CarMax’s own page states that every car carries a 30-day limited warranty, longer in select states, and directs buyers to the store for written details. This warranty is about faults and repairs, not change of mind: it does not let you return the car, but it does give you a route if something mechanical goes wrong in the first month.
Beyond that, CarMax offers MaxCare, an optional extended service plan that can run for years depending on the car and the level chosen. MaxCare is a separate purchase with its own terms, deductibles and cancellation rules, so read the plan documents rather than assuming the money-back guarantee’s terms carry over. Every car also arrives with a detailed Experian AutoCheck history report and has passed a 125-point inspection, which is the right moment to ask questions: if the report or the inspection raises anything, raise it inside the 10 days while the guarantee still gives you the exit.
What Can’t Be Returned to CarMax?
The guarantee covers retail vehicle purchases from CarMax stores. It does not cover the reverse transaction: selling your car to CarMax is a final sale, not a return, and there is no cooling-off return right on a car you sold them. Likewise, the guarantee does not cover a car that has been damaged, modified or changed in condition since purchase, and it does not refund transfer or shipping fees. Optional products bought with the car, such as service plans, sit under their own terms rather than the money-back guarantee, so check each product’s documents before assuming it unwinds with the car.
Does CarMax Extend Returns for the Holidays?
No holiday extension to the money-back guarantee is published on CarMax’s site as of 3 November 2026. The 10 days apply in December exactly as they do in June. That matters for Christmas car buying: a car bought on 20 December must be back by 30 December to qualify, including over a holiday period when store hours may be shorter. If you are buying a car as a gift, buy it close to the handover date, confirm the store’s holiday hours, and book the return-or-keep decision into the diary before the 10 days run out.

Frequently Asked Questions
CarMax offers a 10-day money-back guarantee: return the car to the store where you bought it within 10 days, in a condition consistent with purchase, for a full refund. Every car also carries a 30-day limited warranty, longer in select states.
10 days. The 30-day guarantee ran from January 2021 until it was reduced to 10 days effective 12 May 2024. Cars bought on or before 11 May 2024 kept the old 30-day terms, but all current purchases run on 10 days.
No. The guarantee is handled by the store where you bought the car. Take the vehicle, the sales contract and all keys and fobs back to that selling store within the 10 days.
A guarantee return is not a repossession: the store coordinates payoff of the loan in full, and the account closes. Your credit file may still show the original enquiry and the short-lived account, and lender updates usually appear after a monthly cycle or two.
No. Any fee paid to ship or transfer a vehicle to your store is separate from the purchase price and is non-refundable, even when the car itself is returned under the guarantee.
Your trade-in has usually already entered CarMax’s inventory, so getting the same car back is unlikely. If negative equity was rolled into the new loan, you must repay it or finance it into another vehicle, subject to approval.
A 30-day limited warranty, longer in select states: see the store for written details. Optional MaxCare cover can extend protection for years, under its own separate terms.
No. No holiday extension is published, so the 10 days apply year-round. A car bought just before Christmas must be returned within 10 days even across the holiday period, so check store holiday hours in advance.

Conclusion
CarMax’s return policy is one of the strongest in used-car retail, provided you use it on its actual terms: 10 days, selling store, same condition. The old 30-day figure still floating around the internet is the trap: plan for 10 days, inspect the car in the first few, and keep the paperwork and keys together. After the guarantee, the 30-day limited warranty and optional MaxCare take over, but neither of them gives you your money back. The guarantee is the exit, and it only lasts a week and a half.
