Goodwill Return Policy: Mostly Final Sale, With a Few Local Exceptions
Goodwill has no single national return policy, and that is the first thing to understand before you buy anything there. Goodwill is a network of 155 independent, community-based nonprofit organisations in the United States and Canada, and each one sets its own rules for the stores it runs. Most Goodwill thrift stores sell everything as-is and final sale, with no returns, no exchanges and no store credit.
The exceptions are narrow: on ShopGoodwill.com, an item damaged in shipping or grossly misdescribed may qualify for a return within 7 days, but only with prior authorisation. A handful of local Goodwill organisations do allow limited returns — usually store credit within 7 or 14 days — but only if you kept your receipt and the original tag. This guide explains the national picture, the online rules, and the local exceptions, so you know exactly where you stand before you pay.

How to Return an Item to Goodwill
- Find out which Goodwill sold it to you. Goodwill stores are run by independent local organisations, so the name on your receipt — not the national brand — decides your rights. Check the receipt or the store sign for the local organisation’s name.
- Check that organisation’s published policy before you travel. Look up the local Goodwill’s website or call the store. Many publish a simple rule — “all sales final” — and if that is the rule, no trip to the store will change it.
- If a return is allowed, bring the receipt and the original tag. The local organisations that do accept returns require both. In Arizona, eligible returns need the purchase receipt and the item with its original Goodwill tag still attached. In Central and Southern Indiana, you also need a valid driver’s licence or state identification card.
- For a ShopGoodwill.com purchase, contact the seller first — before you ship anything back. Returns are not accepted without prior authorisation. Use the “contact seller” link on the listing or open a customer service ticket, explain the damage or misdescription, and wait for approval.
- Return within the window and in the required condition. Arizona allows 7 days, Indiana allows 14 days, and ShopGoodwill’s damage exception allows 7 days from receipt. After the window closes, the sale is final.
Is There One Goodwill Return Policy?
No — and Goodwill itself says so in its own words. Goodwill Industries International describes itself as a network of 155 community-based, autonomous organisations in the United States and Canada, with a presence in 12 other countries. Each of those organisations runs its own stores, sets its own prices and writes its own return policy. There is no national returns desk, no national returns phone line and no single policy page that covers every store. The national organisation’s own guidance is to use the store locator on goodwill.org, or call (800) GOODWILL, to find the Goodwill that runs your store — because that local organisation is the only one that can answer a question about your purchase. Any guide that quotes a single “Goodwill return policy” with one window for the whole country is describing one local organisation’s rules, not a national standard.
Can You Return Items to a Goodwill Thrift Store?
In most places, no. The most common published rule across Goodwill thrift stores is all sales final. Goodwill Industries of South Central California states it plainly in its FAQ: “we maintain a No Return Policy on all purchases made at our thrift retail locations” and “All Sales Are Final. We do not accept returns, exchanges, or offer store credit for any items once they have been purchased.” Goodwill Greater Milwaukee & Chicago says the same in its FAQs: “All items are sold ‘as is’ and all sales are final” and “Goodwill does not accept returns.” The reason is built into the model: every item is a donation, sold cheaply to fund job training and employment programmes, and the stores do not have the margins or the systems to process returns the way a regular retailer does. That is why both organisations tell shoppers to test electronics and try on clothing before buying — once you have paid, the item is yours.
A few local organisations are more generous, and the differences are worth knowing because they are large. Goodwill of Central and Northern Arizona accepts eligible returns within seven days of purchase at its Metro-Phoenix, Yuma and Northern Arizona locations, provided you bring your purchase receipt and the item still has its original Goodwill tag attached. Eligible returns receive in-store credit, redeemable for one year. Seasonal items such as Halloween or Christmas merchandise are not eligible at all. If you have lost the receipt, there is still a small route back: returns without a receipt receive the last known discount amount of $1. Goodwill of Central & Southern Indiana goes further: customers can return merchandise within 14 days of purchase with the receipt, for any reason, and receive the full value on a Goodwill gift card with no expiry date. Returned merchandise must have its original tags attached, and you need a valid driver’s licence or state identification card. The same policy states that it does not apply to Goodwill Outlet Store purchases, where all sales are final, and that it only covers purchases made in its own central and southern Indiana territory.
Policies also change. Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont announced on 5 November 2026 that, beginning 11 January 2027, the original Goodwill tag must be attached to all clothing items in order to be returned — and any clothing without its original tag will be considered final sale, even if it was purchased within 30 days. The lesson is simple: the tag on the item and the receipt in your pocket are the two things that decide whether a local Goodwill will even look at your return.
What Is ShopGoodwill.com’s Return Policy?
ShopGoodwill.com is Goodwill’s online auction platform, created in 1999 and still owned and operated by Goodwill of Orange County, California. More than 130 individual Goodwill organisations list donated items on the shared platform, each running its own listings, photography and shipping. The platform’s published return policy, printed on its listing pages, is blunt: “All merchandise is donated, and sold AS-IS, NO RETURNS, and all auctions are final.” Bids cannot be retracted and purchases cannot be cancelled. Items listed as non-functioning, untested, as-is or for parts are not eligible for a refund at all.
There is one published exception, and it is narrow. Merchandise damaged due to packaging, or grossly mischaracterised, might qualify to be returned within 7 days, but prior authorisation is required and certain qualifications apply. Returns will not be accepted without authorisation, and misuse of the return and refund process will result in users being reported and blocked. If you think your item qualifies, contact the seller through the “contact seller” link — the listing text itself tells buyers to ask about quality or authenticity before bidding, because after the auction closes the sale is final.
Individual sellers on the platform can add their own terms on top of the platform rule. For example, Goodwill Industries of Central Texas states in its seller terms that return requests are accepted within seven days of receipt, except for bulk jewelry grab bags and boxes, bulk currency lots, bulk Lego, bulk lots of cards and mini-figures, and bulk cell phone lots, which will not be accepted at all. It also warns that all returns may be subject to a 10% restocking fee, that shipping and handling charges are not refunded, and that the buyer must return the item before a refund is issued. Other sellers set different windows — some allow five days, some three — so always read the return policy printed on the specific listing before you bid, because that listing’s terms are the ones that apply to your purchase.
Two more platform rules catch buyers out: payments must be received within ten days of auction close, and local pickup items must be collected within two weeks of payment, after which they are considered abandoned and donated for resale, without refund.
Can You Return to Goodwill Without a Receipt?
Usually not, and where a return is possible without one, the value is tiny. At the local organisations that accept returns, the receipt is a stated requirement: Arizona requires the purchase receipt alongside the original tag, and Indiana requires the receipt, the original tags and photo ID. Without a receipt, Arizona’s published fallback is the last known discount amount of $1. At the many Goodwills that are all sales final, the receipt makes no difference at all, because no return is accepted with or without one. On ShopGoodwill.com, the question is whether the item was damaged in shipping or grossly misdescribed, and whether you have prior authorisation — not whether you kept a receipt. Keep your receipt and your tags anyway: at the few Goodwills that do accept returns, they are the difference between a refund and a refusal.
What Can’t Be Returned to Goodwill?
At an all-sales-final Goodwill, the answer is everything — every item in the store is final sale. At the local organisations that do accept returns, the published exclusions are clear. Seasonal merchandise is the most common exclusion: Arizona states that Halloween and Christmas items are not eligible for returns, because those products are only available for a limited time. Goodwill Outlet purchases are final even at organisations whose retail stores accept returns — Indiana’s policy says so explicitly. Items without their original tag are final sale at the organisations that require tags, and from 11 January 2027 the Southern Piedmont will treat untagged clothing as final sale outright. Sale items are also commonly excluded at local Goodwills. On ShopGoodwill.com, the non-returnable list is printed on every listing: items described as non-functioning, malfunctioning, untested, as-is or for parts are not eligible for a refund, and bulk lots — jewelry grab bags, currency lots, Lego lots, card lots and cell phone lots — are excluded from return requests under the Central Texas seller terms. If a listing says “as-is” or “for parts”, assume the sale is final no matter what arrives in the box.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
Goodwill does not offer cash refunds as a rule. Where a local organisation accepts a return, the refund comes as store credit or a gift card, never as cash back to your card. Arizona issues in-store credit on a return merchandise card, redeemable for one year. Indiana issues the full value on a Goodwill gift card with no expiry date. South Central California’s published policy is explicit that it does not accept returns, exchanges or store credit at all — but it adds that store management reserves the right to offer a refund at its discretion in exceptional circumstances, evaluated case by case and never guaranteed.
On ShopGoodwill.com, refunds work differently again. If a return is authorised under the 7-day damage or misdescription exception, the refund is issued only after the item is received back, and shipping and handling charges are not refunded. Some sellers, such as Central Texas, warn that a 10% restocking fee may apply. There is no published timetable for how fast an authorised ShopGoodwill refund is processed, because each of the 130-plus participating organisations handles its own returns — so ask the seller for its timeline when you request authorisation, and keep your postage receipts.
| Return route | How the refund works |
|---|---|
| Arizona thrift stores (eligible returns) | In-store credit on a return merchandise card, redeemable for one year |
| Indiana thrift stores (eligible returns) | Full value on a Goodwill gift card, no expiry date |
| Most other thrift stores | No refund — all sales final |
| ShopGoodwill.com (authorised exception only) | Refund after the item is received back; shipping not refunded; possible 10% restocking fee |
| Discretionary manager refund (rare) | Case-by-case only, never guaranteed |
Does Goodwill Extend Returns for the Holidays?
No. Neither Goodwill Industries International nor ShopGoodwill.com has published a holiday return extension as of 8 November 2026, and the local rules above apply in December exactly as they do in June. In fact, the seasonal direction runs the other way: seasonal merchandise such as Halloween and Christmas items is excluded from returns at the local organisations that otherwise accept them, and the Southern Piedmont’s new tag rule takes effect in January. If you buy a gift at Goodwill in December, assume it cannot be returned — and if the local Goodwill does allow returns, buy early enough that the 7-day or 14-day window still covers the person you are buying for.
Is Returning Different for Store and Online Purchases?
Completely different, because they are different businesses. A thrift store purchase is governed by the local Goodwill organisation that runs that store: all sales final in most places, a short store-credit window in a few. A ShopGoodwill.com purchase is an online auction governed by the platform’s published policy — as-is, no returns, auctions final — plus the individual seller’s terms printed on the listing. You cannot return a ShopGoodwill purchase to a thrift store, and you cannot return a thrift store purchase through ShopGoodwill. Each channel has its own rules, its own contact route and its own exceptions, and neither channel’s rules help you in the other one.

Conclusion
Goodwill’s return policy is not one policy at all — it is more than 150 local policies, and the most common one is no returns. Most thrift stores sell donated goods as-is and final sale, ShopGoodwill.com auctions are final with only a 7-day damage or misdescription exception, and the few local organisations that do accept returns want your receipt, your original tag and your photo ID within a week or two. Check the tag, keep the receipt, test the item before you pay, and treat every Goodwill purchase as final unless your local Goodwill’s own published policy says otherwise.
