Apple Return Policy 2026: 14-Day Returns, iPhone Rules & Refund Timelines
Apple’s return policy gives you 14 calendar days from the date you receive your item to return or exchange it, as long as you bought it directly from Apple and bring it back in its original condition with everything it came with. There is no restocking fee in Apple’s published US policy, a refund to a credit or debit card is sent to your bank within five business days of Apple receiving the item, and a gift returned with a gift receipt is paid out as an Apple Gift Card rather than cash.
This guide explains how Apple returns work, the iPhone fine print, what cannot be returned at all, and how fast each refund method pays out.
RETURN PERIOD — 14 calendar days (from the date you receive the item)
IPHONE — 14 days, undamaged with accessories — returning it does not cancel your wireless account
GIFT RETURNS — with a gift receipt, your refund is an Apple Gift Card
NO RECEIPT — Apple’s policy is built on returns with a receipt or gift receipt — no receipt, no standard return route

How to Return an Item to Apple
- Start the return online or in store. For an online order, sign in to your Order Status (Order Listing) page on apple.com, open the item and choose the option to start a return. In-store purchases can simply be taken back to an Apple Store. You have 14 calendar days from the date you received the item either way.
- Turn off the security features before you send anything back. Apple builds in features such as Find My to protect a device if it is lost or stolen. If those features are still active and cannot be disabled, Apple may refuse the return or exchange — so sign out and disable them first.
- Repack the item completely. Apple asks that the item be repackaged with all the cords, adapters and documentation that were included when you received it, in its original condition. Missing parts are the most common cause of a delayed or refused return.
- Print the return label and ship it, or drop it at a store. Online returns come with a return label to print and attach to the box; you can then schedule a pickup with the carrier or hand the package in at one of the carrier’s locations. If you would rather not ship, an online order can also be returned to any US Apple Store.
- Wait for inspection and your refund. Returned products may require inspection. Once Apple receives your item, your refund is initiated; card refunds are sent to your bank within five business days, and Apple states that an approved refund or exchange is issued within 10 business days.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Apple?
The standard window is 14 calendar days, counted from the date you receive the item — not from the day you ordered it. The product must be in its original condition, with all of its included parts, accessories and packaging, and you need your receipt. Two limits catch people out. First, only items purchased directly from Apple — on apple.com, in the Apple Store app or at an Apple Store — can be returned to Apple at all; an iPhone bought from a carrier store or a big-box retailer goes back under that seller’s policy. Second, products can be returned only in the country where they were purchased, so a US purchase cannot be returned to an Apple Store abroad.
One genuinely useful extra: if Apple reduces the price of an Apple-branded product within 14 calendar days of the date you received yours, you can visit an Apple Store or contact Retail Customer Care at 1-800-MY-APPLE within 14 days of the price change and ask for a refund or credit of the difference. Limited-time price reductions and special sales events, such as Black Friday, are excluded.
Do iPhones Play by Different Rules?
The window is the same — an undamaged iPhone, returned with its included accessories within 14 days of the date you received it, qualifies for a full refund under Apple’s standard policy. What is different is everything that sits behind the phone. Apple states it plainly: returning your iPhone may not automatically cancel or reset your wireless account. You remain responsible for your wireless service agreement and for any fees your carrier charges — activation, usage or early-termination charges are the carrier’s, not Apple’s. The same warning applies to a cellular iPad. Before you return an iPhone, speak to your carrier about what happens to your line, your number and any financing agreement, because Apple cannot unwind those for you.
Can You Return a Gift You Received?
Yes, and Apple has a specific rule for it. If you return an item with a gift receipt, Apple will offer you an Apple Gift Card for the value rather than refunding the original buyer — the person who gave you the gift does not get their card charged back, and you do not get cash. Gifts bought on apple.com can be returned through the “Return a Gift” route by signing in to your Apple Account, or taken to an Apple Store with the gift receipt inside the same 14-day window. If the gift was paid for partly with the buyer’s Apple Account balance, that portion can only go back to their balance or an Apple Gift Card, so a gift receipt is by far the cleanest route for the recipient.
What Can’t Be Returned to Apple?
Apple publishes a short list of items that are not eligible for return:
- Opened software — with one narrow exception below
- Electronic software downloads
- Software-Up-To-Date Program products (software upgrades)
- Apple Gift Cards, including the previous-generation Apple Store Gift Cards and App Store & iTunes Gift Cards
- Apple Developer products (membership, technical support incidents, WWDC tickets)
The software exception: you can return software provided it has not been installed on any computer — but if the software carries a printed license and the seal or sticker on the packaging is broken, it cannot be returned. Two more practical blocks: a device returned with its security features still enabled (see Step 2 above) may be refused outright, and personalized items — an engraved iPad or AirPods — and custom-configured Macs cannot be exchanged in an Apple Store. They can still be returned for a refund under the standard policy, which is then issued to the original payment method.
Does Apple Charge a Restocking Fee?
No. Apple’s published US Sales and Refunds Policy contains no restocking fee for consumer returns — return an undamaged product inside the 14 days with its accessories and packaging, and the refund is based on your original payment method, in full. That is a genuine difference from electronics rivals such as Best Buy, which charges fees on phones and other categories. The conditions Apple does enforce instead are the condition and completeness of the item itself: a product that comes back damaged, incomplete or locked to your account can be refused after inspection, which is why the state of the item matters more at Apple than any fee schedule.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
Once Apple receives your item, a refund is initiated immediately, and how it reaches you depends on how you paid:
| Payment method | How and when the refund arrives |
|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | Sent to the card-issuing bank within five business days of Apple receiving the returned item; your bank then decides when the credit posts to your account |
| Apple Gift Card | Refunded to you as a new Apple Gift Card by email |
| Apple Account balance | That portion is refunded back to your Apple Account balance — or as an Apple Gift Card by email if your balance is at or near its maximum limit |
| Cash or cash equivalent over $750 | Refunded by a check mailed to you within 10 business days |
| After inspection (all methods) | Apple states an approved refund or exchange is issued within 10 business days |
If you cancelled a pickup item that you had already been billed for, Apple initiates the refund as soon as you submit the cancellation request — you do not have to wait for anything to ship back. Note the split in the card timeline: Apple’s five business days covers Apple sending the money to your bank, and your bank’s own posting time comes on top of that.
Does Apple Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Apple usually gives holiday shoppers extra time — but as of 29 October 2026, Apple had not published an extended holiday return window for the 2026 season, and its published returns page still showed the standard 14 calendar days. Treat the 14 days as the rule that applies to anything you buy now. If and when Apple announces a holiday extension, the extended deadline for your specific item will appear on the Order Status page for your order and on your receipt — check there rather than relying on last year’s dates, because the extension has historically started in November and has never applied retroactively to items already outside it. Carrier-financed iPhones have also been excluded from the extension in previous seasons, so read the terms of any announcement carefully before counting on it.
Is Returning Different for Store and Online Purchases?
The 14-day window is identical, but the mechanics differ slightly. An item bought in an Apple Store can be returned or exchanged at any Apple Store in the same country, subject to stock for exchanges. An item ordered online gives you both routes: start the return from your Order Status page and ship it back with the printed label, or take it to any US Apple Store. Online items that arrive damaged or incorrect can be returned to any US Apple Store, or handled by contacting Customer Service at 1-800-676-2775. The exceptions to remember are volume returns — ten or more of the same product must go back to the store where you bought them — and engraved or custom-configured items, which are return-by-refund only and cannot be swapped over the counter.

Apple on Social Media
Apple keeps a much smaller social presence than most retailers, and its main website does not push a row of profile links the way other stores do. Its official profiles include:
YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Apple · Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/apple · X (Twitter): https://twitter.com/Apple
These are Apple’s official brand profiles. Apple does not handle returns through social media — for anything about an order, the Order Status page and the phone lines in the contact table above are the routes that will actually resolve it.

Apple’s return policy is the strictest of the big names on time and the simplest on everything else: 14 calendar days, no restocking fee, no category maze — but a firm line on where you bought the item, what condition it comes back in, and who owns your phone contract afterwards. Disable Find My before you ship anything, keep every cable and adapter, and remember that a gift receipt turns into an Apple Gift Card, not cash. Do those three things and an Apple return is one of the fastest in retail.
