Crate and Barrel Return Policy: 30 Days From Receipt, a Holiday Extension and Strict Furniture Rules
Crate and Barrel’s return policy gives you 30 days from receipt to return eligible items in new, unused and resalable condition, with valid proof of purchase. The headline exceptions are generous in one direction and strict in the other: holiday purchases from 15 October to 25 December 2026 can come back up to 31 January 2027, and gift registry purchases get 90 days from the event date — but furniture is excluded from the holiday extension, and custom or made-to-order furniture cannot be returned at all.
You also pay the way back. Shipping fees are not refunded, and customers are responsible for return shipping costs and any pickup fees. This guide covers the 30-day rule, the holiday and registry extensions, the brand-by-brand store rule, and the refund forms that depend on what proof you hold.

How to Return an Item to Crate and Barrel
- Check your window and your proof. Count 30 days from receipt, or check the holiday and registry dates below if they apply. Find your proof of purchase: receipt, eReceipt, order confirmation, packing slip, order number, or gift registry number. Without proof, Crate and Barrel states it cannot accept the return.
- Return to the right brand. Crate & Barrel items go to a Crate & Barrel store, Crate & Barrel Kids items to a Crate & Barrel store, CB2 items to a CB2 store, and Hudson|Grace items to a Hudson|Grace store. A Crate & Barrel Outlet purchase goes back to an Outlet. Cross-brand returns are not part of the published process.
- For a store return of a non-furniture item, bring item and proof. Take the item and your proof of purchase to the store of the brand where the purchase originated, within the window. For furniture and rugs, contact the store of purchase first to arrange the return — do not simply turn up with a sofa.
- For a mail return, use the online returns feature. Start the return with your order number and shipping ZIP code, select the eligible items and the reason, print the UPS label, pack the item, and drop it at any UPS store. You pay the return shipping.
- Track the return and watch for the refund. Once Crate and Barrel receives your eligible mail return, the refund posts to your original form of payment within 7 to 10 business days. Keep the tracking until the refund lands.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Crate and Barrel?
The standard window is 30 days from receipt for eligible items in new and unused or resalable condition, with valid proof of purchase. The published wording gives Crate and Barrel discretion — returns are accepted “in our sole discretion” — so condition and proof are not formalities. An item that arrives used, damaged through normal wear and tear, or without any proof of purchase can be refused even inside the 30 days.
Two extensions sit on top of that standard window, and both are worth knowing before you buy. The holiday extension covers eligible items purchased from 15 October 2026 through 25 December 2026, which can be returned up to 31 January 2027. Furniture is expressly excluded from that extension, so a holiday sofa follows the standard route, not the January date. Gift registry purchases get a different clock: eligible registry items can be returned through 90 days from the event date, again excluding furniture.
Which Items Can’t Be Returned to Crate and Barrel?
Crate and Barrel publishes a firm exclusion list, and it covers the categories where a return would be unfair or impossible to resell. The following cannot be modified, cancelled, exchanged or returned:
- Personalised items
- Custom or made-to-order furniture
- NFL items
- Items purchased as final sale
- Store floor samples
- Live botanicals
- Cut yardage of fabric
- Items used and/or damaged through normal wear and tear
Wallpaper has a narrower version of the same idea: wallpaper returns are accepted only on unused, unopened rolls. Once a roll is opened, it cannot go back. Custom and personalised items do have one safety net: if a custom or personalised item arrives with a manufacturing defect or damage caused during transit, Crate and Barrel will repair or replace the defective item or damaged area, or arrange an exchange if repair or replacement is not possible.
How Do Furniture Returns Work?
Furniture and rugs follow a different path from everything else, and the difference starts before you move the item. To return furniture or rugs to a store, the published process says to contact the store of purchase to arrange the return. The store coordinates the return rather than accepting a walk-in furniture drop-off.
Furniture is also carved out of both extensions: the holiday extension to 31 January 2027 expressly excludes furniture, and the 90-day gift registry window expressly excludes furniture too. If you are buying furniture as a gift or for the holidays, the standard 30-day discipline applies, and the store of purchase is your first call — not the general returns portal. Customers are responsible for return shipping charges and any pickup fees, so ask about the pickup cost when you arrange the return, before the collection is booked.
Can You Return Without a Receipt?
No — and Crate and Barrel says so directly. The published rule is that proof of purchase is required to issue an exchange, credit or refund for eligible items, and that the company is unable to accept any items for return or exchange without proof of purchase. There is no receipt-free fallback in the published FAQs, unlike some retailers that offer store credit for unverified returns.
The accepted forms of proof are broad, which softens the rule in practice. Crate and Barrel accepts an original receipt (including a printed store or gift receipt, an eReceipt, or an electronic order confirmation), a packing slip, an order number, or a gift registry number. Check your email for the order confirmation or eReceipt before you conclude you have no proof — most online and registry purchases leave one of these behind.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
The refund you receive depends on the proof you hold and how you paid. With full proof of purchase, the purchase price is refunded in the original form of payment. The exceptions are where the payment itself was not ordinary money, or where the proof is a gift or registry record rather than a purchase record.
| Situation | Refund form in the published rules |
|---|---|
| Proof of purchase, ordinary payment | Purchase price refunded to the original form of payment |
| In-store refund of a cash sale larger than $100 | Refunded as a check by mail |
| Purchase paid with a gift card or merchandise credit | A new gift card or merchandise credit is issued |
| Gift receipt or gift packing slip presented | Purchase price refunded by merchandise credit |
| Gift registry number presented without proof of purchase | Item’s current selling price refunded by merchandise credit |
| Mail return, after receipt | Refund posts to the original form of payment within 7 to 10 business days |
Shipping is the consistent exception across every row. Shipping charges are not refunded, and customers are responsible for return shipping costs and any pickup fees. A mail return therefore costs you the return postage on top of the original delivery charge you do not recover.
How Do Online Returns and Mail Returns Work?
Mail returns run through Crate and Barrel’s online returns feature, and the steps are published in full. Start the return with your order number and shipping ZIP code, select the eligible items and tell Crate and Barrel why you are returning them, print the UPS shipping label, pack the items, and drop the parcel at any UPS store. You can track the return online, and once the eligible return is received, the refund posts within 7 to 10 business days.
If you prefer not to use the online feature, the published alternative is to follow the instructions on the packing slip enclosed with your order, insure the package, and mail it to the address on the packing slip. If you have lost the packing slip, contact Customer Service rather than guessing an address. Items bought outside the United States can only be returned or exchanged within the country of purchase, or sent back to the address on the return label.
Does Crate and Barrel Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Yes — with dates, and with a furniture carve-out. Eligible items purchased from 15 October 2026 through 25 December 2026 can be returned up to 31 January 2027, excluding furniture items, with the published exclusions still applying. That is a genuine extension over the standard 30 days from receipt, and it is designed, in Crate and Barrel’s own words, “to account for holiday gift giving”.
The boundary dates matter. A purchase from 14 October 2026 falls outside the holiday window and follows the standard 30 days, while a purchase from 15 October 2026 can wait until 31 January 2027. Furniture bought in the same holiday period does not get the extension at all. Keep the receipt and the delivery date together for any holiday purchase, so you can prove which window you are in.

Conclusion
Crate and Barrel’s policy rewards careful record-keeping: keep the receipt, respect the brand boundary, and arrange furniture returns through the store that sold them. Do that, and the 30 days — stretched to 31 January 2027 for holiday purchases and 90 days from the event for registry gifts — is plenty. Lose the proof, open the wallpaper, or order custom furniture on a whim, and the same policy turns firm very quickly.
