Foot Locker Return Policy: 45 Days, Unworn With Tags, and a $6.99 Mail Fee Unless You’re FLX

Foot Locker gives you 45 days to return or exchange merchandise, whether you bought it online or in a store — but the clock runs from the original shipment date for online orders, and everything must come back unworn, in new condition, with the original tags, in the original boxes and bags. A return that arrives more than 45 days after shipment is not accepted and is sent back to you.

The cost of the return depends on who you are. FLX Rewards members return by mail for free; everyone else has $6.99 deducted from the refund when they use the ReadyReturns label. In-store returns are free for everyone. This guide covers the 45-day window, the FLX fee dodge, the no-receipt exchange rule, and what happens when the shoes are defective.

Return Period: 45 days from the original shipment date (online) or purchase date (in store)

Item Condition: Unworn, in new condition, original tags, original boxes and bags

Mail Return Fee: $6.99 for non-FLX members; free for FLX Rewards members

No Receipt: Exchange only, at the lowest selling price from the past 60 days, with phone + two-factor verification

How to Return an Item to Foot Locker

  1. Check the date first — from shipment, not delivery. For online orders the 45 days run from the original shipment date, so count from when the order shipped, not when the box arrived. A return received after day 45 is sent back to you.
  2. Check the condition. The item must be unworn and in new condition, with all original hang-tags attached, in the original boxes and bags. Worn shoes are the classic rejection: if the soles show wear, the return fails.
  3. Choose mail or store. By mail, start the return through the ReadyReturns portal (footlocker.readyreturns.com) and use its label. In store, take the item to any local Foot Locker store — use the store locator on footlocker.com.
  4. If you are not an FLX member, expect the $6.99 deduction. The fee is taken from your refund when you use the ReadyReturns label. Joining FLX Rewards — a free programme — makes mail returns free, and exchanges ship back free when the new item is in stock.
  5. For an in-store purchase returned by mail, include the receipt. Foot Locker states plainly that without the receipt the return ‘will not be accepted and will be returned to sender’, so put the receipt inside the box.
  6. If the item is wrong, damaged or defective, report it immediately. Contact customer service first, and return it within 45 days. The $6.99 fee is waived and your original standard shipping fee comes back too.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Foot Locker?

You have 45 days, and Foot Locker applies the same limit to online and in-store orders. The two clocks differ in their start point, and the difference matters: for an online order the 45 days run from the original shipment date, while for an in-store purchase they run from the original purchase date. Treat the earlier date as day one, because a return that arrives late is not held for a decision — it is returned to sender.

There is no published US holiday extension. Foot Locker’s European help pages publish an extended holiday window (orders placed 1 November–31 December 2026 returnable until 31 January 2027), but that extension is for European orders; the US returns and refunds pages publish no equivalent. If you are buying early for the holidays in the US, plan around the standard 45 days unless your order confirmation says otherwise.

The guarantee printed on the policy page is a fit promise, not an extension: ‘It’ll fit or we’ll exchange it for free!’ — an exchange within the same 45 days, under the same unworn-with-tags conditions.

The $6.99 Mail Fee — and How FLX Members Avoid It

The fee is the most complained-about part of the policy, and it is also the most avoidable. Foot Locker’s refunds page states it plainly: “We offer free returns for FLX Rewards members. If you’re not an FLX Rewards member, a $6.99 return shipping fee will be deducted from your refund when using our Ready Returns label. Only the product cost and taxes will be refunded.”

Three things follow from that sentence. First, the fee applies only to mail returns using the ReadyReturns label — returning the item to a store costs nothing, member or not. Second, FLX Rewards is free to join, so a shopper who creates an account before ordering never pays the fee. Third, the fee comes out of the refund, so on a small return it takes a visible bite: a $25 item returned by mail by a non-member comes back as $18.01 before tax is accounted for.

The fee disappears entirely when Foot Locker is at fault. If you receive incorrect, damaged or defective merchandise, the $6.99 is not charged, and the refund also includes the original standard shipping fee you paid. Original shipping fees are otherwise not refunded on a change-of-mind return.

Can You Return to Foot Locker Without a Receipt?

In store, yes — but as an exchange, not a refund. Foot Locker’s in-store policy states that without a receipt, “unworn merchandise may be exchanged at the lowest selling price from the past 60 days, which may reflect any applicable promotions or discounts”, and verification through a phone number and two-factor authentication is required.

The “lowest selling price from the past 60 days” is the sting: if the shoes went on sale at any point in the last two months, the exchange value is the sale price, not the price you paid. And the exchange is the only option — there is no refund without a receipt in store.

By mail, the receipt is effectively required. For an in-store purchase returned by mail for a refund, Foot Locker states that “your receipt will need to be included or the return will not be accepted and will be returned to sender”. With your original receipt, by contrast, you may exchange the item or receive a refund to your original form of payment. Keep the receipt, or photograph it the day you buy.

All returns and exchanges, with or without a receipt, “may be subject to limitations if misuse of the return policy is suspected”, and a complete copy of the return policy is available on request in store.

What Can’t Be Returned to Foot Locker?

Foot Locker’s published policy does not carry a long list of named non-returnable categories, but the exclusions that follow from its terms are these:

  • Worn or used merchandise. Anything worn, washed or damaged after delivery fails the unworn-and-new-condition test.
  • Items without their tags, boxes or bags. The policy requires original tags, original boxes and original bags; missing any of them is a ground for rejection.
  • Returns received after 45 days. Late returns are not accepted and are returned to sender — the deadline is itself the exclusion.
  • Customised shoes. Customised products cannot be returned unless they are defective, under the terms published for custom orders.
  • Release-day and limited-edition products. Some launch and limited-edition drops carry different return terms or are final sale — check the product page before you buy, because the standard 45 days does not always apply.
  • International returns and COD returns. Foot Locker does not accept COD returns or international returns under the US policy.

The practical rule is simple: if it is unworn, tagged, boxed and inside 45 days of shipment, it goes back; if any one of those four fails, it probably does not.

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

Refunds go back to the original form of payment used on the order, and the timing depends on the payment method:

Payment methodRefund timing after processing
Credit or debit card5–7 business days, depending on your financial institution
Gift card1–2 business days
PayPal2–4 business days (longer if a card is linked to the PayPal account)
Klarna3–7 business days to restore funds to your Klarna account
AfterpayUp to 10 business days

For Klarna orders, the refund is processed for the return value and your payment schedule is updated: if the refund is larger than the payments already made, Klarna refunds the difference to the payment method on file; if it is smaller, you are still responsible for paying the adjusted balance, and you remain responsible for any payments scheduled during the processing window. A refund made to a payment method other than Klarna does not stop Klarna charging you — the remaining Klarna payments must still be paid to clear the balance.

For Afterpay, the payment schedule is adjusted to reflect the new total order value, starting with the last instalment and working backwards, so the furthest-out payments are the ones reduced to zero. On a full return of a monthly-payments purchase, amounts paid are refunded but interest already paid is not, and interest may be charged for the period before the refund is processed.

Does Foot Locker Extend Returns for the Holidays?

Not in the US, as far as the published US policy goes. Neither the US returns article nor the US refunds article mentions extended deadlines for November or December purchases, gift receipts, or a later return date for gifts. The only holiday reference on the US pages is that holidays can add time to return shipping and delivery.

Foot Locker’s European help centre does publish an extended holiday window — orders placed between 1 November and 31 December 2026 can be returned until 31 January 2027 — but that is a European policy for a 28-day European window, and it does not apply to US orders. Assume the standard 45 days applies to US holiday gifts, and ask a store associate or Customer Care whether any seasonal extension is running before you buy, in writing through chat or email if the answer matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

You have 45 days to return or exchange unworn merchandise in new condition with the original tags, boxes and bags. Online orders count the 45 days from the original shipment date; in-store purchases count from the purchase date. Mail returns cost $6.99 for non-members and are free for FLX Rewards members; in-store returns are free.

Join FLX Rewards, which is free — members get free mail returns. Or return the item to a Foot Locker store, where returns cost nothing. The fee is also waived when the item is incorrect, damaged or defective.

No. Returned merchandise must be unworn and in new condition with the original tags. Shoes that show wear on the soles or elsewhere will be rejected. If a defect appears after use, report it to customer service — it goes to the returns department for inspection rather than through a normal return.

No. Returns received more than 45 days after the shipment date are not accepted and are returned to sender. There is no published US holiday extension, so the 45 days is a hard deadline for US orders.

In store, yes — as an exchange, at the lowest selling price from the past 60 days, with phone-number and two-factor verification. By mail, an in-store purchase returned for a refund needs the receipt included, or it will not be accepted and will be sent back to you.

It depends on how you paid: gift cards 1–2 business days, PayPal 2–4, credit or debit cards 5–7, Klarna 3–7, and Afterpay up to 10 business days. Refunds go back to the original form of payment, and only the product cost and taxes are refunded on an ordinary return.

Yes, within the same 45 days and under the same unworn-with-tags conditions. Exchanges can be done in store or by mail, and Foot Locker notes that exchanges ship back free when the new item is in stock. Without a receipt, an exchange is your only option in store.

No extension is published on the US returns or refunds pages as of 7 November 2026. Foot Locker’s European site does publish one (orders 1 November–31 December 2026 returnable until 31 January 2027), but that applies to European orders, not US ones.

Conclusion

Foot Locker’s policy is a fair 45 days with a hard edge: the clock runs from shipment, the shoes must be unworn with every tag and the original box, and a late return is simply sent back. The $6.99 mail fee is the part most shoppers can dodge entirely — join FLX Rewards for free, or walk the return into a store. The receipt is the other half of the bargain: with it you get a refund to your original payment; without it, an exchange at the lowest price of the last 60 days.

DICK’S Sporting Goods now owns Foot Locker, but the policy on the wall is still Foot Locker’s own, published on its own help centre. Buy with the 45 days in mind, try the shoes on carpet, and keep the receipt and the box until you are sure they stay.
