Free People Return Policy: 30 Days for a Refund, an eGift Card After That and Free US Returns

Free People’s return policy gives you 30 days from delivery to return unworn, unwashed merchandise for a refund to your original form of payment. Miss the 30 days and the refund changes form, not availability: returns received after 30 days are refunded as a Free People eGift card, and items stay eligible for return for up to one year from purchase. After a year, Free People accepts no returns or exchanges at all.

Returns and even exchanges are free on US orders, which is generous for a fashion retailer, and the rules are unusually clear about what counts as returnable: unworn, unwashed and unaltered, in the original packaging, with all tags attached and the original sale receipt. This guide covers the 30-day line, the holiday extension to 31 January 2027, and the beauty, swim and intimates rules that catch shoppers out.

How to Return an Item to Free People

  1. Check the condition first. The item must be unworn, unwashed and unaltered, in its original packaging, with all tags attached and accompanied by the original sale receipt. Anything washed, worn or altered will not be accepted.
  2. Choose the route: store or mail. Items bought online can be returned to a Free People store or by mail through the Free Returns Portal. In-store purchases go back to a store.
  3. For a mail return, start in your Order History. Use the Free Returns Portal from your Order History to start the return and print a free return label. US returns are free, and even exchanges are free for US orders.
  4. For a store return, bring the item, the tags and the receipt. The store needs the original sale receipt and the item in its original condition.
  5. For a gift return, use the portal and flag it as a gift. Enter the order number and billing postal code from the order, check “This was a gift” and enter the email address the eGift card should be sent to. Once the return is received and processed, an eGift card is issued.
  6. Report problems fast. Missing or damaged items and packages must be reported within 30 days of the shipping date. If you experience an issue with a damaged product outside the 30-day window, contact the service team for assistance.
  7. Wait for the Return Notification email. Free People sends a Return Notification email once the return has been processed, and refunds then reach the original form of payment within 1–3 business days.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Free People?

The headline window is 30 days from delivery for a refund to your original form of payment. The clock runs from delivery, not from the order date, and it is the date Free People’s warehouse receives the return that counts — so post early in the window rather than on its last day.

The policy’s real generosity is what happens after day 30. Most fashion retailers close the door; Free People changes the refund form instead. A return received after 30 days is refunded as a Free People eGift card, and that remains available until one year from purchase. Only after a year does the door close entirely: Free People will no longer accept returns or exchanges.

Exchanges run on the same 30 days from delivery, and they are free for US orders. International exchanges are not currently offered, and Free People merchandise bought at an independent boutique or department store must be returned to the location where it was purchased — Free People will not take another retailer’s sale back.

Does Free People Extend Returns for the Holidays?

Yes — and the extension is published with exact dates. For purchases made from 1 October 2026 to 24 December 2026, a refund will be issued to the original form of payment for returns received by 31 January 2027. If the return is received after 31 January 2027, a Free People eGift card will be issued instead.

For purchases made after 24 December 2026, the standard rule applies: a refund to the original form of payment if the return is received within 30 days, and an eGift card if it is received after 30 days. Either way, items are eligible for return within one year of purchase. The holiday extension is therefore a refund-form extension, not an eligibility extension: it keeps the money on your card for an extra month, but the one-year cut-off does not move.

What Condition Must the Item Be In?

The condition rule is short and strict: unworn, unwashed and unaltered, in original packaging, with all tags attached, and accompanied by an original sale receipt. Clothes that have been washed or worn will not be accepted for returns, and Free People repeats the point across its help pages because it is the most common reason a return is refused.

Three categories carry their own condition rules, and each one is stricter than the general rule.

Beauty and Wellness. Free People is unable to process returns for opened and used beauty and wellness products. All beauty and wellness products must be returned unopened, unused and in original condition and packaging to the returns warehouse — and store locations do not accept returns for beauty products at all. A used lipstick or an opened serum has no return route.

Swim and Intimates. Free People is unable to process returns for swimwear or intimate apparel items that have been worn or are returned in a soiled condition. All intimate apparel must be returned in original condition, with original packaging and tags attached. All swimwear must be in new and unused condition with sanitary strips in place.

Defective merchandise is the exception to the strictness: Free People gladly accepts unworn, unwashed or defective merchandise for return or exchange, and damaged product reported within 30 days of the shipping date is handled through the service team.

What Can’t Be Returned to Free People?

Free People’s published exclusions and restrictions are these:

  • eGift cards. They cannot be returned or exchanged, and a return paid for with an eGift card is refunded as a new eGift card.
  • Opened or used Beauty and Wellness products. They must be returned unopened, unused and in original condition and packaging, to the returns warehouse only.
  • Worn or soiled swimwear and intimate apparel. Swimwear must be new and unused with sanitary strips in place; intimates must be in original condition with packaging and tags.
  • Washed, worn or altered clothing. The general condition rule excludes all of it.
  • Items returned after one year. After one year from purchase, Free People will no longer accept returns or exchanges.
  • Merchandise bought at independent boutiques and department stores. It must be returned to the location where it was purchased; Free People will not accept it.
  • Free People Additions items from third-party sellers. These are returned directly to the third-party seller rather than to Free People, and only a refund is available, not an exchange.
  • Non-Free People items returned in error. Free People is not responsible for items that are not theirs and cannot repost items that have been deemed faulty or cannot be resold.

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

The refund form depends on one thing only: when Free People’s warehouse receives the return.

When the warehouse receives itWhat you get
Within 30 days of deliveryCredit to your original form of payment
After 30 days, within 1 year of purchaseA Free People eGift card
Holiday purchases (1 Oct – 24 Dec 2026) received by 31 Jan 2027Refund to the original form of payment
Holiday purchases received after 31 Jan 2027A Free People eGift card
Paid with an eGift cardA new eGift card in the amount of the credit, emailed to you
Gift returnAn eGift card, sent to the email address given in the portal

Free People sends a Return Notification email once the return has been processed. Refunds then take 1–3 business days to reach the original form of payment. Return processing itself can take one to two weeks, so the full wait from posting the parcel to seeing the money is usually a week and a half or more. US returns and even exchanges are free, so no return shipping fee is deducted from the refund on a US order.

Can You Return to Free People Without a Receipt?

The published policy says returned items must be accompanied by an original sale receipt, and that requirement is repeated in the US returns terms on Free People’s own product pages. For online orders, the order number in your Order History and the billing postal code serve the same purpose in the Free Returns Portal, so an online purchase is traceable without a paper receipt.

For an in-store purchase, the receipt is the proof. Free People does not publish a receipt-free store return rule, and this guide will not invent one. Keep the receipt until the 30 days have passed, and keep it for a year if you want the eGift card route to stay open — the receipt is what proves the purchase date if the return is made after 30 days.

Conclusion

Free People’s return policy is one of the fairest in fashion retail: a clear 30 days for a card refund, a full year of eGift card eligibility after that, free returns and free exchanges on US orders, and a published holiday extension to 31 January 2027. The strictness is all in the condition rule — unworn, unwashed, unaltered, tags on, receipt kept — and in the category rules for beauty, swim and intimates, where opened or worn means no return at all.

Keep the tags on until you are sure, keep the receipt for a year, and post the return early enough that the warehouse receives it inside 30 days. Do that, and the refund lands on your original payment method within days of processing.
