Gap Factory Return Policy: 30 Days, Free Exchanges and Holiday Returns to 15 January

Gap Factory’s return policy gives you 30 days from delivery for online purchases, or 30 days from the purchase date for in-store purchases, to return or exchange an item with a sales receipt. Exchanges are free, and in-store returns are free too. The only fee in the policy is the $6 return shipping fee on a mailed return package for nonmembers — Encore Members mail returns free.

Two details set this policy apart from Gap’s own. First, the brand rule is absolute: Gap Factory items can only be returned at Gap Factory, never at Gap, Old Navy, Athleta or Banana Republic. Second, the Encore membership programme stretches the window: Premier members get 45 days and All-Access cardmembers get 60 days, with the extra days refunded as a Merchandise Return Card. This guide covers the 30-day window, the Encore extensions, the mail-only categories and the holiday extension to 15 January.

Return Period: 30 days from delivery (online) or purchase date (in store)

Encore Members: 45 days Premier, 60 days All-Access, refunded as a Merchandise Return Card after 30 days

Mail Returns: $6 per package for nonmembers, free for Encore Members; exchanges free

Holiday: Purchases 15 Oct – 24 Dec returnable through 15 Jan, or 30 days, whichever is later

How to Return an Item to Gap Factory

  1. Check the 30 days and the condition. Count from the delivery date for an online order, or from the purchase date for a store purchase. The item must be in its original condition — unwashed and unworn — or it will not be accepted.
  2. For an online order, choose store or mail. Most online items can be returned at a Gap Factory store for free, or mailed back. Exchanges are free either way. A $6 return shipping fee applies to each return package mailed by a nonmember; Encore Members mail returns free.
  3. For a store purchase, go back to a store. Items purchased in store cannot be returned by mail. Take the item and your receipt to a Gap Factory store — not a Gap, Old Navy, Athleta or Banana Republic store, because returns can only be made at the brand of purchase.
  4. Watch for the mail-only labels. Items marked “mail only” on the product page, in your shopping bag and on the invoice can be returned only by mail. Swimwear and maternity items are also mail-only, and items sold by third-party sellers or bought through TikTok Shop, DoorDash or Shopify cannot be returned in store at all.
  5. Bring proof of purchase. Refunds require the shipping confirmation email for online purchases, the store receipt, or the original credit card used for the purchase. Without one of these, the refund cannot be processed as published.
  6. For a gift, bring the order details. A gift bought online needs the order number from the shipping invoice or confirmation email and the email address where the refund should be sent. A gift bought in store follows the in-store process.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Gap Factory?

The standard window is 30 days — from the delivery date for online purchases, and from the date of purchase for in-store purchases. Returns and exchanges with a sales receipt are accepted within those 30 days, and the window is the same for a refund and for an exchange.

Encore members get more time, and the extra time is the programme’s most useful benefit. Premier Members who were signed in online or provided their phone number to make their purchase in store may return merchandise up to 45 days after purchase or delivery. All-Access Cardmembers on the same terms may return merchandise up to 60 days after purchase or delivery. The catch is the refund form: if the return is made over 30 days after purchase or delivery, a Merchandise Return Card is issued instead of a refund to the original payment method. The extra days buy flexibility, not cash.

Damaged or defective items ignore the calendar entirely: they may be returned or exchanged at any time. That is the one category where the 30 days does not apply, and it is worth using promptly — a defect reported the day it is found is a simpler return than one reported months later.

Does Gap Factory Extend Returns for the Holidays?

Yes — and the dates are published on the Return Policy FAQ. Items purchased online or in stores between 15 October and 24 December may be returned through 15 January the following year, or 30 days from the delivery date for online purchases or the date of purchase for in-store purchases, whichever is later. Proof of purchase is required.

The “whichever is later” wording is generous in practice. A purchase made on 15 October gets 30 days to mid-November, so the 15 January date applies instead — three months to return. A purchase made on 24 December gets 30 days to 23 January, which is later than 15 January, so the 30-day date applies. Either way, the item stays returnable into the new year.

One exclusion matters: items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded from the extended holiday return policy, and those items follow the third-party seller’s own return policy instead. Check who sold the item before relying on the January date.

What Condition Must the Item Be In?

The condition rule is two words: unwashed and unworn. Items should be in their original condition, and items not in this condition will not be accepted. That is the whole test for ordinary clothing — no washing, no wearing, no altering — and Gap Factory repeats it in both the Encore section and the eligibility section of its policy.

Three categories carry extra conditions on top of the general rule.

Swimwear must have the original price tags and hygienic liner intact, and can only be returned by mail. A swimsuit without its liner, or with the tags removed, is not returnable.

Sunglasses may be returned within 30 days of the delivery date if they are new, accompanied by the original receipt and with tags attached. Defective sunglasses can be returned at any time.

Maternity items can only be returned by mail, whatever the purchase channel. Masks are final sale and are not eligible for returns and exchanges at all.

What Can’t Be Returned to Gap Factory?

Gap Factory’s published exclusions and restrictions are these:

  • Final sale items. They cannot be returned or exchanged by mail or in stores.
  • Encore Market items. They are final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded.
  • Masks. Final sale, not eligible for returns or exchanges.
  • Items not in original condition. Anything washed, worn or altered will not be accepted.
  • Items bought through external marketplaces. Purchases made through TikTok Shop, DoorDash or similar marketplaces must be returned through the same marketplace, under that marketplace’s own policy.
  • Third-party seller items. These follow the third-party seller’s return policy, not Gap Factory’s, and are excluded from the holiday extension.
  • Orders placed on Shopify, or in the Instagram Shop or Facebook Shop. These cannot be returned in a Gap Factory store.
  • Items marked “mail only”. They can be returned only by mail, not in store — the store route is closed for these, even though the item itself is returnable.

The brand rule deserves emphasis because it surprises Gap shoppers. Returns and exchanges can only be made at the brand of purchase. A Gap Factory item cannot be returned at a Gap store, an Old Navy store, an Athleta store or a Banana Republic store, and a Gap item cannot be returned at Gap Factory. Use the store locator to find a Gap Factory location specifically.

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

Most refunds are made in the form of original payment, and the refund form follows the payment method exactly.

If you paid with…Gap Factory will…
A credit cardRefund your purchase amount to that same card
A gift cardRefund your purchase amount to a new gift card
A promotional code or discountExchange the item for the same style in another size or colour — if you choose a different style, the discount cannot be transferred
PointsConvert the dollar value of the points and credit your Encore Membership Program account within 1–2 days
PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or AfterpayProcess your refund via the payment partner back to your original form of payment, for returns made in store and by mail
Both a gift card and a credit cardCredit the refund first to a gift card, then to the credit card

Refunds include the taxes originally paid on the item being returned. If the refund is applied to a credit card, the card company may take up to 10 additional business days to post the refund to the account. For exchanges, the item is returned first and a second transaction — the purchase — completes the exchange, so an exchange is processed as two steps rather than one.

Gift returns have their own form. Gifts returned with a gift receipt or invoice receive a gift card in the amount of the purchase price. Gifts returned without a gift receipt or invoice receive a merchandise certificate in the amount of the current selling price — which may be less than the purchase price if the item has since been marked down.

Can You Return to Gap Factory Without a Receipt?

The published policy requires proof of purchase for a refund: the shipping confirmation email for an online purchase, the store receipt, or the original credit card used for the purchase. That list is the whole published route — there is no receipt-free store credit rule on the Return Policy FAQ, and this guide will not invent one.

In practice, the original credit card is the safety net. If you paid by card and no longer have the receipt, the card itself can serve as proof of purchase at the store. Encore members have a second safety net: a purchase made while signed in online, or with a phone number given in store, is linked to the membership account, which is how the 45- and 60-day extensions are verified. Keep the receipt, pay by card, or shop signed in — one of the three keeps the return open.

Conclusion

Gap Factory’s return policy is a straightforward 30 days with two useful extensions and one hard boundary. The extensions are the Encore windows — 45 days for Premier members, 60 days for All-Access cardmembers, both refunded as a Merchandise Return Card after day 30 — and the holiday window to 15 January. The boundary is the brand rule: Gap Factory items go back to Gap Factory, and only Gap Factory, with no exceptions for the other Gap Inc. brands.

Shop signed in, keep the receipt, and check for the “mail only” label before assuming a store will take the item back. Do that, and the 30 days — or 45, or 60 — works exactly as advertised.
