Gap Return Policy: 30 Days to Return or Exchange, Free in Store, and a $6 Mail Fee for Non-Members
Gap gives you 30 days to return or exchange most items — 30 days from the delivery date for online orders, or 30 days from the purchase date for store purchases. Returns in a Gap store are free for everyone, and returns by mail are free for Encore Members, while non-members pay a $6 return shipping fee. Exchanges are free by either route.
Two extensions are worth knowing: the membership windows and the holiday window. Premier Members get up to 45 days and All-Access Cardmembers up to 60 days, but anything returned after day 30 comes back as a Merchandise Return Card, not money. And anything bought between October 15 and December 24 can be returned through January 15 of the following year. This guide covers the windows, the fees, the items with special rules, and how refunds are paid.
Return Period: 30 days from delivery (online) or purchase (in store)
Mail Return Fee: Free for Encore Members; $6 for non-members
Exchanges: Free
Holiday Returns: Purchases 15 October–24 December returnable through 15 January the following year

How to Return an Item to Gap
- Check the clock first. Count 30 days from the delivery date for an online order, or from the purchase date for a store purchase. If the item is damaged or defective, the clock does not apply — those can go back at any time.
- Check the item’s condition and its label. The item must be unwashed and unworn, in its original condition. Check whether it is marked “mail only”, swimwear, maternity or a final sale item, because those change the route — see the special-rules section below.
- For the fastest free return, take it to a Gap store. In-store returns are free for everyone. Bring the item, your receipt or the card you paid with. Remember it must be a Gap store, not Gap Factory, Old Navy, Athleta or Banana Republic.
- For a mail return, start it through Gap’s online returns process. Gap will generate a prepaid return label. Encore Members ship free; non-members have a $6 return shipping fee deducted from the refund. Exchanges by mail are free for everyone.
- For an exchange, the return comes first. Gap processes the item back, then a second transaction buys the replacement. If you are exchanging rather than returning, start it the same way and pick the new size or colour.
- Keep your proof of purchase. Refunds require it: the shipping confirmation email for online orders, the store receipt, or the original credit card used for the purchase.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Gap?
The standard answer is 30 days, and Gap states it twice on its own policy page: returns and exchanges must be made within 30 days of the delivery date for online purchases, or the date of purchase for in-store purchases, and returns with a sales receipt are accepted within 30 days of purchase.
Two things stretch that window, and neither of them is automatic for every shopper. The first is membership: Premier Members who were signed in online, or gave their phone number when buying in store, may return merchandise up to 45 days after purchase or delivery. All-Access Cardmembers who did the same may return up to 60 days. The catch is the refund form: anything returned more than 30 days after purchase or delivery is issued as a Merchandise Return Card (MRC), not as money back to the original payment method.
The second is the season. Items bought online or in stores between October 15 and December 24 may be returned through January 15 of the following year, or 30 days from the delivery or purchase date, whichever is later. Proof of purchase is required, and items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded from the extension. For the 2026 holiday season that means purchases made between October 15 and December 24, 2026 can be returned through January 15, 2027.
The only category with no deadline is damage. Items that are damaged or defective may be returned or exchanged at any time, with no 30-day limit.
What Condition Must the Item Be In?
Gap’s condition rule is short and strict: items “should be in their original condition: unwashed and unworn. Items not in this condition will not be accepted.”
That is the test for almost everything in the store. Try it on at home, keep the tags on, and do not wash it before deciding. A shirt that has been worn to work, or washed once to see how it holds up, is not returnable under the published policy.
Swimwear has an extra condition of its own: it must have the original price tags and hygienic liner intact. New sunglasses need the original receipt and tags attached to come back inside 30 days.
Which Items Have Special Return Rules?
Several categories do not follow the standard route, even inside the 30 days:
- Items marked “mail only”. These can be returned only by mail, never in a store. The marking appears on the product page, in your shopping bag and on the invoice.
- Swimwear. It can only be returned by mail, and only with the original price tags and hygienic liner intact.
- Maternity. Maternity items can only be returned by mail.
- Gap Beauty. Beauty products can only be returned in store, and opened or used items cannot be returned or exchanged at all.
- New sunglasses. Returnable within 30 days of the delivery date with the original receipt and tags attached. Defective sunglasses can be returned at any time.
- Masks. Masks are final sale and are not eligible for returns or exchanges.
- Third-party seller items. Items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded from the holiday extension, and online items sold by third-party sellers cannot be returned in a store.
- External marketplace orders. Items bought through TikTok Shop, DoorDash or another external marketplace must be returned through that same marketplace, under that marketplace’s own policy and timeframes — not Gap’s.
- Shopify orders. Orders placed on Shopify cannot be returned in a Gap store.
One routing rule covers everything else: store purchases cannot be returned by mail. If you bought it in a store, it goes back to a store. And a Gap purchase can only be returned at a Gap store — not at Gap Factory, Old Navy, Athleta or Banana Republic, even though they share the same parent company.
What Can’t Be Returned to Gap?
Gap publishes a short final-sale list, and it is absolute — these items cannot be returned or exchanged by mail or in stores:
- Final sale items — anything marked “Final Sale” on the website or at purchase
- Encore Market items — items purchased through the Encore Market are final sale and cannot be returned, exchanged or refunded
- Masks — final sale, not eligible for returns or exchanges
Beyond those, the condition rule is the real gatekeeper: anything washed, worn or not in its original condition will not be accepted. And the route rules above mean some items are effectively unreturnable in the channel you would prefer — a “mail only” item cannot be taken to a store, and a store purchase cannot be mailed back.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
Most refunds go back to the original form of payment, and the form depends on how you paid:
| If you paid with… | Gap will… |
|---|---|
| A credit card | Refund the purchase amount to that same card |
| A gift card | Refund the purchase amount to a new gift card |
| Points (Encore / Gap Inc. Credit Card) | Convert the dollar value back to points and credit your account within 1–2 days |
| A promotional code or discount | Exchange the item for the same style in another size or colour — the discount cannot be transferred to a different style |
| PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Klarna or Afterpay | Process the refund via the payment partner back to your original form of payment, for returns made in store and by mail |
| A gift card and a credit card together | Credit the gift card first, then the credit card |
A few timing notes from the published policy. Refunds include the taxes originally paid on the item being returned. If the refund is applied to a credit card, your credit card company may take up to 10 additional business days to post it to your account. If you return merchandise bought with points and your Encore account is closed, the dollar value of the points will not be refunded or credited at all.
Gifts follow their own rule. A gift returned with a gift receipt or invoice receives a gift card for the amount of the purchase price. A gift returned without a gift receipt or invoice receives a merchandise certificate for the amount of the current selling price — which may be less than the original price if the item has since been marked down.
Does Gap Extend Returns for the Holidays?
Yes — and it is one of the more generous holiday extensions among clothing retailers. Items purchased online or in stores between October 15 and December 24 may be returned through January 15 of the following year, or 30 days from the delivery date (online) or purchase date (in store), whichever is later. For this season, that is January 15, 2027 for purchases made October 15 to December 24, 2026.
Two conditions apply. Proof of purchase is required, and items shipped and sold by third-party sellers are excluded from the extension — those follow the third-party seller’s own return policy instead.
Can You Return to Gap Without a Receipt?
Gap’s published rule is that refunds require proof of purchase: the shipping confirmation email for an online purchase, the store receipt, or the original credit card used for the purchase. The 30-day acceptance rule is also written around receipts: “Returns/exchanges with sales receipt are accepted within 30 days of purchase.”
That leaves the card as the practical fallback. If you paid by card and no longer have the receipt, bring the original credit card — Gap lists it as an accepted form of proof of purchase, and it is how the store can trace the transaction. There is no published promise of a merchandise credit for receipt-free returns, so do not count on one; keep the receipt or the confirmation email for the full 30 days, and longer if you are a Premier Member or All-Access Cardmember using the extended window.

Conclusion
Gap’s policy is a tight 30 days with a few genuinely useful escape valves. The holiday extension to January 15 covers the whole gift season, Premier and All-Access members get up to 45 and 60 days, and damaged or defective items have no deadline at all. But the trade-offs are real: after day 30, members get a Merchandise Return Card instead of money back; non-members pay $6 to return by mail; and final sale and Encore Market items never come back.
The practical rules are simple. Keep the tags on and do not wash it until you are sure. Keep the receipt or confirmation email. Return in a Gap store if you can — it is free and it is the only route for a store purchase. And if you bought it between October 15 and December 24, you have until January 15 to decide.
