Altar’d State Return Policy: a Lifetime Window, Free Exchanges and Different Rules for Home
Altar’d State’s return policy opens with a line almost no other retailer prints: it offers a lifetime return window on eligible merchandise. Inside that window, the mechanics are friendly too — proof of purchase is asked for “whenever possible,” and Guest Services can help locate your purchase if you don’t have it; exchanges are always free; and a return to any store refunds to your original method of payment when you bring the credit card you paid with (without the card, you receive store credit).
Two costs and one split to know: a prepaid mail label costs $8.95, deducted from your refund, and home furnishings play by different rules entirely — 30 days from receipt, tiered return fees, and no returns in store.
RETURN PERIOD – Lifetime on eligible merchandise (home furnishings: 30 days from receipt)
MAIL RETURNS – $8.95 prepaid label fee deducted from your refund
EXCHANGES – Always free
NO RECEIPT – Guest Services can help locate your purchase

How to Return an Item to Altar’d State
- Decide whether your item is fashion or home. Eligible fashion merchandise carries the lifetime window. Home furnishings — furniture, rugs, lighting, mirrors and the like — must be returned within 30 days of receiving them, in new and unused condition, and can never be returned to a store. The steps below are the fashion route; the home route is in its own section.
- For the free, fastest route, go to any store. Bring the item with your order confirmation email. Online orders are gladly accepted at local stores — the exceptions are Bedding, Pillows, and Throws, which are not accepted in store at this time.
- Bring the credit card you paid with. To receive a refund to your original method of payment in store, you must bring your credit card with you. If you do not have your card, you will receive store credit instead.
- To return by mail, request the prepaid label. If the item was purchased on the website, request a return label through the returns portal or through your Altar’d State account under Purchase History, referencing the Ecomm Order ID on your packing slip. Items purchased in-store or through Instagram/Facebook can also be returned by mail via the portal. The $8.95 return shipping fee is deducted from your refund.
- To exchange by mail, use the comment box. Go through the same return process and fill out the comment box provided for each item with your desired exchange product. If it is in stock, it will be exchanged; if it is sold out, you will receive a refund. There is no fee for exchanges — exchanges are always free. (Bedding, Pillows, and Throws cannot be exchanged.)
- Lost your proof of purchase? Ask Guest Services. Altar’d State asks you to provide proof of purchase whenever possible, but if you don’t have it, the Guest Services team can help locate your purchase — call or text 1-800-284-7348.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Altar’d State?
For eligible fashion merchandise, the published answer is a lifetime return window — Altar’d State’s returns page states it in its first sentence, and its FAQ repeats it. There is no 30-, 60- or 90-day count to beat, and the holiday answer is the same as the everyday answer (see below). Two honest qualifiers: the window covers eligible merchandise — the final sale, gift card and made-to-order exclusions still apply at any age — and proof of purchase is requested whenever possible, with Guest Services as the fallback for locating a purchase.
Home furnishings are the exception to the lifetime promise. Their window is 30 days from receiving your merchandise, the merchandise must be new and unused, and returns are not accepted on lighting that has been installed.
Can You Return to Altar’d State Without a Receipt?
Altar’d State’s published position is the softest in this guide series: “We ask that you provide proof of purchase whenever possible, but if you don’t have it, our Guest Services team can help locate your purchase.” The home furnishings section repeats the same offer. There is no published statement that a return will be refused for lack of a receipt. What a receipt — and, in store, the physical credit card — does control is the form of the refund: card refunds need the card present, and without it the store issues store credit.
What About Bedding, Pillows and Throws?
These three categories sit in a gap between the two halves of the policy. They can be returned by mail — small items, bedding, pillows and throws carry the standard $8.95 return fee — but at this time Altar’d State does not accept returns on Bedding, Pillows, and Throws in store, and it does not offer exchanges on them either. If you bought bedding online and want it gone, the mail label is the only route.
How Do Home Furnishings Returns Work?
Different window, different fees, different door:
- Window: returns are accepted within 30 days of receiving your merchandise; merchandise must be new and unused; installed lighting cannot be returned. On the bright side, an opened item is fine — Altar’d State’s FAQ confirms you do not need to return an item with all its original packaging.
- Never in store: home furnishing returns are not currently accepted in store, including online home orders.
- Fees: small items, bedding, pillows, throws and lighting — $8.95; UPS items, rugs and small furniture — 10% of the total cost of the product; Doorstep items — $79; White Glove items — $149. You are responsible for return shipping costs, and shipping fees will not be refunded.
- How to start: request a return label through the portal or your account’s Purchase History for lighting and smaller items; for larger items, contact Guest Services at 1-844-495-1987 — rugs arrive with included return materials and instructions.
- Refunds: for furniture, rugs and mirrors, Altar’d State’s FAQ states the refund will be issued at time of receipt.
- Damage exception: if an item arrives defective or damaged, Altar’d State will refund or replace it at no additional cost to you.
What Can’t Be Returned to Altar’d State?
The official page’s exclusion list is:
- Final sale items
- Store floor samples
- Gift cards
- Made-to-order items
- Installed lighting — lighting returns are not accepted once it has been installed
- Used bedding — named in the FAQ exclusions for home furnishings
- Bedding, Pillows and Throws, in store only — not ineligible overall, but mail-only for both returns and exchanges
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
In store, the refund goes to your original method of payment when you bring the credit card you paid with; without the card, the refund becomes store credit. By mail, the refund is reduced by the $8.95 prepaid-label fee when you use Altar’d State’s label; exchanges by mail carry no fee at all. For home furnishings, the FAQ states refunds for furniture, rugs and mirrors are issued at time of receipt, minus the applicable return fee from the tiered schedule. Altar’d State’s fashion pages do not publish a refund processing-time promise, so keep your return confirmation until the money lands.
Does Altar’d State Extend Returns for the Holidays?
There is nothing to extend, and Altar’d State says so itself. Its published holiday answer: “We believe you should truly love what you buy. If your order isn’t a perfect match, you can return or exchange it whenever you need. Our policy stays the same all year long (including sale items).” The lifetime window on eligible merchandise does not change in December — though home furnishings keep their 30 days from receipt in every month of the year.
Can You Get a Price Adjustment?
No. Altar’d State’s FAQ answers this one in a single sentence: “No, we do not offer price adjustments to reflect any past or future sales or promotions.” With a lifetime return window, the practical workaround shoppers use is the return itself — but on the published policy, a formal price adjustment simply does not exist.

Conclusion
Altar’d State’s return policy is the most forgiving in women’s fashion on time — a lifetime window, help finding a lost purchase, free exchanges — and quietly strict about place and product: the card must be in your hand for a card refund, bedding never crosses a store’s returns desk, and everything with a furniture tag lives under a 30-day, fee-bearing, mail-only regime. Shop fashion with confidence; measure the sofa twice.
