Columbia Sportswear Return Policy

Columbia Sportswear’s return policy gives you 60 days from the purchase date to return unworn items for a refund to your original form of payment. A mail return costs a flat $6, deducted from your refund, while returns to a Columbia store are free — but there is no direct online exchange: you return for a refund and place a new order.

This guide covers the window, the fee, the 10-item store rule, and what happens to loyalty rewards.

How to Return an Item to Columbia Sportswear

  1. Check your window and the condition. You have 60 days from the purchase date, and the item must be new and unworn, in its original packaging with all original tags still attached. Keep footwear in its original box.
  2. Start the return online. Initiate the return through Columbia’s returns route, select the items, and you will be emailed a UPS return label and an invoice to include in the package as a PDF.
  3. Pack and drop off. Print the label, seal the invoice inside the package, stick the label outside, and take it to any UPS drop-off location. In areas UPS does not serve — including Guam, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Armed Forces addresses and some Alaska zip codes — Columbia provides a pre-paid USPS label instead.
  4. Or take it to a Columbia store. Columbia.com purchase returns are accepted with the original email invoice within 60 days at any Columbia store in the country of purchase. Save your order confirmation email to present in store.
  5. Track it and wait. You can track the return through Columbia’s return landing page, and the refund is issued 7–10 business days after the warehouse receives it.

How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Columbia?

The window is 60 days from the date of purchase, but the wording matters: for online returns, the warehouse must receive and process your return within 60 days to issue a refund to your original form of payment. That means the clock is not just about when you start the return — it is about when the parcel arrives. Ship with time to spare, especially near the end of the window.

The condition rule is strict across the board: the item must be unworn, unused, in its original packaging, in its original condition, with all original tags still attached. Footwear needs its original box. Columbia inspects every return for its original condition once it arrives, so keep tags on and packaging intact until you are sure you are keeping the item.

Damaged arrivals get their own route. If your order arrived damaged and is within 60 days of purchase, contact Columbia’s Customer Care team. If the purchase is over 60 days old, the warranty department handles your options instead.

What Does a Columbia Return Cost?

The fee is simple and flat:

  • By mail: $6. Columbia’s $6 flat-rate UPS and USPS shipping fee is automatically deducted from your refund, rather than paid upfront to the carrier.
  • In store: free. Returning a Columbia.com purchase to a Columbia store carries no label fee.
  • Your own label: varies. If you ship with your own return method to Columbia Sportswear Returns, 6940 N Leadbetter Ave, Portland, OR 97203, the shipping fee varies with the carrier you choose.

Original shipping and handling charges are not refunded either way — the Terms of Sale state that shipping and handling for delivery and return shipping charges will not be refunded. So a mail return comes back minus the $6 label fee and minus what you originally paid for delivery.

Why Doesn’t Columbia Offer Direct Exchanges?

Columbia does not offer a direct online exchange process, and it says why: available stock changes every day, so it cannot guarantee your item will still be in stock by the time a reorder is placed. Instead, it runs a return-and-reorder process: return the original item within 60 days for a refund to your original form of payment, then place a new order for the correct size or colour. If you would like help with the reorder, Columbia’s Customer Care team can assist.

That also means exchanges in the usual sense do not exist for online orders — if you need a different size, start the return first and order the replacement straight away, before your size sells out.

Can You Return a Columbia Order to a Store?

Yes — with the original email invoice, within 60 days of purchase, at any Columbia store in the country the item was purchased from. Save your order confirmation email and present it in store. But several order types are not accepted as in-store returns:

  • Returns of 10 or more items — these must be initiated online and returned through the mail to the e-commerce returns department, and cannot be returned in store
  • Professional Purchase Orders and Partner Purchase Orders
  • PayPal and Klarna orders under 10 items — these may be returned in store, but only for a Merchandise Credit equal to the value of the items returned; for a refund to the original payment, or for 10+ items, initiate online and return by mail
  • Orders bought with an additional discount (Fans & Followers, Pro purchase, Partner) — these must be returned to Columbia’s distribution centres directly

Loyalty rewards behave differently by route, too: rewards from online orders are refunded automatically if the items are returned by mail, but an online order returned to a store results in a physical gift card. If you used loyalty rewards or a gift card on the original purchase, a mailed return gives you a new Virtual Merchandise Credit by email instead.

What Can’t Be Returned to Columbia?

Columbia’s policy is mostly about condition rather than categories, but the exclusions are real:

  • Worn or used items — returns must be new and unworn
  • Items missing tags or packaging — all original tags must still be attached, and items must be in their original packaging
  • Footwear outside its original box — footwear returns need the original box
  • Returns arriving after 60 days — the warehouse must receive the return within 60 days for a refund to the original payment method
  • Third-party retailer purchases — this policy covers Columbia.com and Columbia store purchases; items bought from other retailers follow that retailer’s policy
  • Store-excluded order types — Professional and Partner purchases, and discounted Fan, Pro and Partner orders, cannot be returned in store

How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?

Refunds go back to your original method of payment, in the amount of the price paid plus applicable taxes, minus the $6 label fee on mailed returns. The timing runs in two stages:

Return routeHow the refund timing works
By mail (UPS or USPS label)Refund issued 7–10 business days after the warehouse receives the return; payments typically process in a further 3–5 business days, depending on your bank
In storeRefund handled at the store with the original email invoice; rewards become a physical gift card rather than an automatic refund
Loyalty rewards or gift card on the orderMailed return: new Virtual Merchandise Credit emailed on completion; store return: physical gift card
PayPal or Klarna orders in storeMerchandise Credit equal to the value of the items returned, not a refund to the original payment

You are notified by email once the return has been processed, and you can track the return through Columbia’s return landing page or by contacting Customer Care.

Does Columbia Extend Returns for the Holidays?

Columbia’s official Online Returns FAQ checked on 3 November 2026 publishes no holiday return extension — no January deadline for December purchases appears on the page. Plan on the standard 60-day rule for holiday purchases, and remember the stricter half of that rule: the warehouse must receive the return within 60 days of purchase, so a gift bought in late November and opened at Christmas leaves only a few weeks to send it back. Start the return the moment the recipient decides.

Conclusion

Columbia’s return policy is generous on time — 60 days is a long window — but strict on the details: the warehouse must receive the return inside that window, tags and boxes must be intact, and there is no swap service, only return and reorder. Use the store route when you can, keep your order confirmation email, and start the return early rather than trusting the post near day 60.
