Forever 21 Return Policy: 30 Days, a $5.99 Mail Fee, and No Direct Exchanges
Forever 21 gives you 30 days to return eligible items for a refund to your original form of payment — 30 days from receipt, or from the ship date for online orders. The items must be unwashed, unworn and undamaged, with all tags attached, and Final Sale and clearance items cannot be returned or exchanged at all.
Two things define the policy beyond the window. First, there are no direct exchanges: if you want a different size or colour, you return the item for a refund and place a new order. Second, the mail route costs money — a $5.99 fee is deducted from your refund for a prepaid UPS label or a boxless UPS drop-off — while returning to a store is free, where a store is open and accepting returns.
Forever 21 is a different company than it was a year ago, and the policy carries the marks of that change. The US stores closed in May 2025 after a second bankruptcy, the brand relaunched online-only in September 2025, and anything issued before 1 May 2025 — returns, gift cards, store credits and rewards — is no longer accepted.
Return Period: 30 days from receipt (online orders: 30 days from the ship date)
Mail Return Fee: $5.99 deducted from the refund (prepaid label or boxless UPS drop-off)
Exchanges: No direct exchanges — return for a refund and place a new order
Final Sale: Final Sale & Clearance items cannot be returned or exchanged

How to Return an Item to Forever 21
- Check the date and the tags. You have 30 days, and the item must be unwashed, unworn and undamaged, with all tags attached. Jewellery must be in its original packaging. Final Sale and clearance items are excluded before you start.
- Start the return in the portal. Go to the returns portal (linked from the Return Policy page as “START A RETURN (US)”) or sign in to your account, open My Orders, select the order, click View Details, then Return, and follow the instructions. You will need your order number and the email address used for the purchase.
- Choose how to send it back. For customers in the continental US there are three options: Boxless Drop Off at a UPS location (an associate packs, prints the label and ships it — $5.99 deducted from the refund); Visit a Store, free (download a return slip and return in person); or Mail It Back with UPS (print a prepaid label — $5.99 deducted). With a carrier of your choice, you pay the shipping yourself.
- If you return by mail, keep the tracking number. Prepaid labels are not available for Alaska, Hawaii or US territories — those customers use their own carrier and pay the shipping. UPS or carrier returns cannot be dropped off at a Forever 21 store.
- If you return to a store, bring the paperwork. You must present your packing slip or confirmation email, which includes the invoice barcode, and the form of payment used for the purchase. Refunds for online purchases returned in store go to the original form of payment and can take up to 10 business days to show.
- If the portal will not work, email. Forever 21’s policy page directs customers who cannot use the return portal to contact Customer Service by email at cs@gordmans.com.
How Long Do You Have to Return Items to Forever 21?
The headline is 30 days, but the policy states the start point two ways: the FAQ page says items may be sent back “within 30-days of receipt”, while the returns policy itself says online purchases are valid “within 30 days from the ship date”. Your order confirmation states the last day to return by mail or to a store — treat that date as the deadline.
In-store purchases have their own statement of the same window: they can be returned for a refund or exchange within 30 days of the date of purchase, with the original receipt, and within the original country of purchase. International online purchases cannot be returned to physical stores.
There is no published holiday extension. The 30 days applies in December exactly as it does in June, which is short for a gift: a present bought in early December is out of time before Christmas week is over.
Why There Are No Exchanges — and What to Do Instead
Forever 21 states the rule twice on its policy page: “We currently do not offer direct exchanges. If you’d like a different size or color, simply place a new order for the item you need. Once we receive your returned item, we’ll issue a refund to your original payment method.”
In practice that means a wrong size costs you two transactions and two waits: the return, then a new order at whatever price the item carries when you re-order it. The only exchange the policy contemplates is in store — “Exchanges are only offered in store” — and even that is limited by which locations are open: “Forever 21 closing locations are unable to process returns for online orders.”
The one place an exchange still works by mail is for damaged, defective or wrong items. There, you can write “Exchange” on the return form in the notes section and Forever 21 will send a replacement of the original item at no cost, as long as the merchandise is available; if it is not available, you receive a refund instead.
The $5.99 Mail Fee
Every prepaid return label costs $5.99, deducted from your refund. The policy applies the fee to each label requested and to each boxless drop-off return, so a return split across two labels costs $5.99 twice. The original shipping charge you paid is also non-refundable on an ordinary return — the refund is the net price after discounts and coupons, minus the $5.99.
The fee is waived in exactly one situation: when Forever 21 sent you the wrong item, or the item arrived damaged or defective. In that case the return shipping fee is waived, the refund includes the original shipping charge you paid, and for a mailed return of a damaged item the return shipping costs are refunded too, as long as a copy of the shipping receipt is attached to the return form.
The free alternative is a store return — but only where a store is open and accepting returns. With all 354 US stores wound down in May 2025 and the brand relaunched online-only, the practical free route is narrower than the policy page suggests. Check with the store before you travel.
What Can’t Be Returned to Forever 21?
The published exclusions are these:
- Final Sale and clearance items. They cannot be returned or exchanged, unless required by law. The same applies to items marked “No Returns”.
- Sale merchandise, clearance items and gift cards / e-gift cards bought as Beauty by Riley Rose products on forever21.com — all final sale.
- Items that are washed, worn or damaged, or returned without their tags. Jewellery returned outside its original packaging is also excluded.
- Returns, gift cards, store credits and rewards issued before 1 May 2025. The ownership change voided them entirely — they are no longer accepted on the site.
- International online orders returned to physical stores. International retail locations cannot accept returns from online orders placed through Global-e.
- Returns after 30 days. Forever 21 states it “will not accept any items for return, refund after 30 days of purchase”.
Gift-card purchases have their own refund rule rather than an exclusion: refunds for online purchases made with a gift card, e-gift card or store credit can only be made to the exact card or credit used for the original purchase, so keep the card after you buy.
How Are Refunds Issued and How Long Do They Take?
Refunds are credited to the original form of payment, for the net price after discounts and/or coupons — no exceptions. The published mechanics are:
| Refund question | Forever 21’s published rule |
| Online purchase returned by mail | Refund to the original payment method, minus the $5.99 label fee and minus the original shipping charge |
| Online purchase returned in store | Refund to the original form of payment; allow up to 10 business days for it to show |
| Paid with a gift card, e-gift card or store credit | Refund only to the exact card or credit used — keep it after purchase |
| Damaged, defective or wrong item | Refund includes the amount paid plus the original shipping charge; no return shipping fee |
| Beauty by Riley Rose (online) | Refund to the original form of payment; allow 2–3 weeks from the return ship date, or 4–6 weeks for international and APO/FPO addresses |
| Original shipping charge | Non-refundable, unless the item was damaged, defective or wrong |
| Colorado and Minnesota Retail Delivery Fees | Non-refundable |
For Beauty by Riley Rose products bought on forever21.com, the policy gives a longer timeline — 2–3 weeks from the return ship date for your account to be credited, and 2–3 billing cycles for the credit to appear on your statement. For ordinary returns the store route quotes up to 10 business days. In both cases the refund is the amount you actually paid after discounts and rewards, never the ticket price.
The Ownership Change: What It Means for Your Return
Forever 21’s current policy cannot be read without the bankruptcy behind it. The US operating company filed for Chapter 11 for a second time in March 2025 and wound down all 354 physical US stores by May 2025. Authentic Brands Group, which owns the Forever 21 intellectual property, relaunched the brand in September 2025 under a digital-first strategy, with the US business now running exclusively through forever21.com under new operating partners.
Three consequences follow for returns. First, the FAQ page states plainly that “as a result of the change in ownership, all returns, gift cards, store credits, and rewards issued before May 1, 2025, will no longer be accepted on our site” — if you are holding a pre-May 2025 gift card or store credit, it has no value under the current policy. Second, the policy page’s references to in-store returns describe a store network that has largely closed; closing locations cannot process online returns, so confirm a location is accepting returns before you go. Third, the customer-service email on the policy page is cs@gordmans.com — Gordmans is one of the new operating partners — which is the address to use if the returns portal will not work.

Conclusion
Forever 21’s policy is a short 30 days with a $5.99 toll on the mail route and no exchanges at all — return it, get the refund, and buy it again if you still want it. The ownership change is the part that catches people out: anything issued before 1 May 2025 is void, the store network the policy still describes has largely closed, and the free store-return route depends on finding a location that is actually open.
Buy with the 30 days in mind, keep the tags on until you are sure, and use the store route where you can — the $5.99 label fee is a needless cost if a free option exists near you.
